S/O taking little one out

in 3rd Trimester

In many of the replies I read the that thread, many people posted that they were concerned about strangers touching the baby.

Maybe I am just really naive, but do people REALLY do this that often?!?!  I would never think to touch somone else's kid, especially a newborn. 

I have always looked and smiled from a distance, but I can't imagine touching...like i said maybe I am naive to this.

    I can't imagine anyone doing this either. But I have also only had 1 rando touch my belly without asking & I guess that happens a lot too! I think if a stanger tried to touch my baby I would slap their hand away.

    I agree- this seems so weird to me. I guess there are a lot of weirdos out there!

    People totally do this!

    When my BFF's baby was a newborn she had to run to the store but didn't want anyone to touch the baby (it was when the swine flu had just broke out back home), so she covered the infant carrier with a blanket.

    Some old lady in line actually lifted the blanket trying to touch the baby! My friend went off on this old lady and said she felt bad but I told her I would have done the same thing!

    I never had a problem with strangers trying to touch my DS. People frequently looked into the stroller at him to get a closer look but they never touched him. That is the height of bad manners.

    i 2nd that people do this frequently.

    i easily had a dozen strangers touch my belly in my first pregnancy and just as many try to touch my son. we didn't go out much during his infancy, b/c it was winter.

    sweet little old ladies are the biggest culprits!

    Yep they do. I am with you, would never dream of touching someone else's baby, especially if I didn't first have permission. When I took my babies out I put the infant carrier in the stroller and kept both canopies up or wore them in a sling. People are a heck of a lot less likely to reach in and touch your LO if they're nestled in a sling next to your boobs! I also perfected the "I'll cut your hand off if you even think about touching my baby" look. I'm a total germ freak, so strangers touching my baby is a total no go.

    Unfortunately, yes...There are some people out there that think it's ok to touch other people's kids.  I replied to the OP about taking DS to Target and Walmart at 4 days old, and then added that a sling or wrap helps avoid this.  The big reason that I switched to a wrap instead of just carrying him when DH was with me to help with him, push the cart, etc. was b/c on that first trip out the freaking Walmart GREETER (touches all sorts of nasty carts, etc.) was trying to touch his FACE!  However, putting him in the wrap for future trips really solved the problem.

    ETA: In fact, DS is over 2yo, and it still happens sometimes.  It's usually elderly people at this point, so maybe it was ok in their time...dunno.  The other day we were sitting on a bench in the entry way to the medical complex where my OB's office is waiting for DH to come in (met us there), and an elderly woman walked right up to DS and pinched and patted both of his cheeks.  I was astounded.

    no one ever touched my dd!  and i took her out the first week she was born.  i cannot wait to get out with the new baby.  it will be so much easier to get out with a spring baby then a winter baby!

    Yup, people do it.  I suspect how common it is may vary regionally (when we lived in FL, most people were pretty hands off...here, we actually had a server want to whisk DD off to show her off around the kitchen.  Mind you, she was 8 month by then, but I still had a "WHAT?" Reaction).  At least she asked, though, some people will just reach right for a baby no matter what the age.

    I have never had the urge to touch a stranger's baby and no one ever approached me and tried to touch my dd.

    I had DS out a few days after getting out of the hospital and never had an issue with anyone trying to touch him.
