Breadwinners?

How many of you moms are the breadwinners of the family - ie make the most money, and had to be careful with maternity leave and rush right back to work because you support a household? I am the breadwinner of my household and am wondering how many out there are like me. :)

  • Not now, but I will be when I graduate next August. By a lot! We'll definitely have to be more careful about mat leave for baby #2

  • We're pretty much even, so we had to be a little careful with mat leave.  I just made sure to save as much money as I could beforehand.
  • I am, though I didn't necessarily have to rush back to work - 8 weeks seemed good to me. The gap is closing between us, though, which is great. I'm looking forward to the day DH makes as much/more than me!

  • Our income is almost exactly equal but we get free benefits through my job, which is the main reason I can't SAH.  We would have to pay like $700 a month for the crappy benefits DH's work offers, so not only would we be losing half our income, we'd be losing even more to pay for benefits if I SAH.

This.  I can't wait until we have enough saved for me to SAH.

  • Let's see...I'm an attorney and DH is a cop...who do you think is the breadwinner, lol?!

    This.

  • Me.

But we planned accordingly and were able to live off of DH's salary while I took the full 12 weeks (6 of which were 100% paid).

I make a little bit more money, not enough that I would refer to myself as the "breadwinner," because it's pretty close, but yeah, I make a bit more, and SAH was not an option for that reason.

  • I'm the breadwinner, but I saved a lot before going out on maternity leave, so I took 13 weeks.
  • I am and now DH is quitting work to go back to school full time so it will be all on me.  I went back to work at 8 weeks and 3 of that was without pay so it was hard on us.

  • The nice thing about Canadian Mat Leave is that we get paid for the year.... so that being said, I'm still the "breadwinner" I just didn't have to rush back to work. Once DH's able to work, then likely he'll be the breadwinner.
  • Me.  I make nearly 3 times as much as he does.  He carries the benefits though.  I took around 9 weeks, or was it 10...  We saved a ton of money though while I was pregnant, so it wasn't that big of a deal.  I had STD coverage which gave me basically one paycheck while I was out, the rest was unpaid.

  • Me.  I only took 8 weeks of maternity leave because the last 4 (12 wks total) would be unpaid.  If DH was working full-time, I totally would have taken the other 4 and got by with just DH's money.

  • Me.  My flameful confession is that I like it like this and would hate to be a SAHM.

  • I make almost double of what DH makes in a month/year!!  I had no choice whether to go back to work or not but I did take 12 weeks for maternity leave - we planned well for it!

I'm right there with you but I have times that I wish I could at least just work part time or work from home!!

  • We are about equal in pay. I took the whole 12 weeks off, which was not a big deal because we had saved for it.
  • Sort of. DH is in law school, so mine is the only income. However, I don't make enough to support us, so we supplement with student loans. But we definitely had to take that into account with my maternity leave.

Not flameful to me! I feel the same about my work. DH carries the insurance, and I think that's the only reason he keeps that job. His job field is flooded and underpaid up here, so I am grateful that he could find anything at all.

I have more friends that are SAHM's than working moms, and sometimes I feel sad to be in the minority that way. I was amazed to see that my post got 29 replies, and thrilled that there are so many working mommies on here! Yay us!

  • i make a smidge more but in EXCELLENT years dh makes 2-3x what i make (he's self employed) and this is not the case now.  i only took off 7 wks after dd was born. lord knows i wish i could have taken off more but no dice, we NEEDED my income as well.

join the club even though dh and i make about the same but it's a VERY hcol area.  i'd go bsc being a sahm - honestly don't know how they do it.

  • I'm currently am. But before I had DD, DH was. DH was laid off in December, so I had to cut my maternity leave short to return to work. It stinks, but we make it work.
