Question for Moms -- Diaper pails (diaper genie / diaper champ) - worth it or skip it?

What say you?

Are diaper pails worth the $$? Or will a plastic garbage can (with lid) and jewel bags do?

Re: Question for Moms -- Diaper pails (diaper genie / diaper champ) - worth it or skip it?

  • We have a Diaper Champ.  I like it because it uses regular trash bags and keeps the smell contained when it is closed.  However, when you open it to put in a diaper, some odor does escape.  A Diaper Genie may be better at keeping the smell contained when opened since it twists the bag after each diaper is put in, but I'm not willing to buy specialized bags.  I would guess that a regular garbage can and bags would work but I would think that more odor (than the Champ) would get out when it's opened because there's no barrier at all between the used diapers in the pail and the top of the can.

  • I personally do not think they're worth the money at all. I'm a nanny of 8 years and with all the families I've cared for, the smell starts to increase as the diaper pail is used over time, and as the baby's stool changes from softer to more solid (when the foods are being introduced). It doesn't contain any more smell than a regular garbage can...I think as long as you remember to take the stinky ones out to the garbage frequently, you'll have no problem. I really think you should save yourself some money. In the nurseries and gear message board, most of the women said to skip it as well.

    Good luck in your decision!

  • For us it is 100% worth because we have 2 dogs. I think the dogs would eventually figure out how to open a regular trash can.

We got the diaper champ off craigslist for $5, check there you may be surprise of the good stuff people are selling.

  • We went with the champ over the genie. Mainly because we could use ANY garbage bag in it, making it cheeper all together. Deffinately helps contain the smell, although when opened to throw a diaper away, the smell does seep out. Still worth it in my opinion.
  • We have a diaper genie.  It does work well, but like pp's have said, it's kind of a pain because of the specialized bags.  When we run out of bags, I end up just filling a plastic bag with diapers during the day and putting it in the dumpster at night, so for me, the genie ends up being a waste most times.

  • we love the diaper genie... but as long as you throw out your garbage every day, I'm sure a regular garbage can and plastic bags would suffice.

  • We have the diaper dekor, and we really like it.  Definitely something to get if you have a dog.

The diaper dekor we like because the box of bags lasts a long time.  I think in the first  year of PJ's life, we've only had to buy 4 boxes of bags.

  • I agree with Katie.  I have the Diaper Champ and it worked well when my son was very young, but as his poop changed, I found it necessary to take out the dirty diapers ASAP - it just didn't contain the smell well enough.  When my second son came along, I didn't even bother.  The Genie may be better, but that was my experience.
