Success after IF

convertible car seat inquiry

My babies are growing out of the Graco Snugride (oh how I'll miss the infant carrier, it's been so easy!).  So I've been looking at convertible carseats.  I was all set on getting the Britax Marathon but I asked myself why Britax?  Because it's "the best".  Who says it's the best?  My friends?  Message boards?  I don't want to go off that.  I was doing some research on BRU and reading reviews.  I came across great reviews for the Evenflo Triump Advance LX.  They said it rated highest in the recent Consumer Reports for Safety.  They said it rated higher than the Marathon for safety.  Now, I haven't read consumer reports.  I haven't read any book about this.  But I do have to buy 2 seats, I have twins.  I could spend the same price for 2 Triumphs that I would for 1 Marathon.  So I don't want to get caught up in the name.  The reviews for the Triumph were outstanding and I like the look of the seat as well.

So, please someone tell me what is the benefit of buying the Marathon over something half the price.  What's so great about it?  Or is it all about the name?

Re: convertible car seat inquiry

  • There is someone on the 6-12 month board with a good link to info she compiled about carseats.  You might want to check over there.

We decided on the Graco MyRide65.  It seems fairly easy to use, I trust it is safe, and the price is good! (esp. with coupons and the twins discount at BRU!)

  • I have the Graco My ride too, I read great reviews about it and it has high safety ratings. I have not used it yet since she is still in the snug ride,,,
  • Britax Marathon had the best ratings that I saw.  I am embarrassed to admit that I liked the pattern (pink and brown polka dots) so that is what won out in the end. : /

  • I did like the name. But because I like what the name stands for.... they are consistently rated high, have good customer follow up and seem to be ahead of the other manufacturers in most categories in the ratings we looked at.

We have a total of 4 seats... 1 britax advocate (we got that one because of the side impact, risper has that one, too, she can offer her opinion, I am sure) and we have 3 cosco senceras. They are also rated pretty high. I like the britax much more, and it is SO much easier to get him in and out. And the britax will be able to RF much longer (weigh-wise) than the others. (1 in my husband's car, 1 in my moms and 1 in my ILs)

If I had to do it again, I would get my advocate and a marathon for my husband's car.

  • We got the Britax (Marathon) because of a combo of word of mouth, safety ratings and wanting a higher-end seat. We also researched what worked well in our car and saw on message boards that most with our car had the Marathon as well. We had the Graco Snugride infant seat and while it got great safety ratings, we HATED it as far as quality of construction/materials. The straps constantly were twisted, latches weren't smooth, hard to get the handle up and down, canopy was poorly designed/attached, et cetera. After that, we wanted something with higher quality construction and materials and LOVE the Britax. Also, the Britax is in so much better than the Snugride was - doesn't budge at all. I could never get the Graco in that well.

  • I think I'm going to have to take a good look at the store to see the quality.  I admit I haven't done that yet.  This obviously is going to last longer than the infant carrier so I'm not afraid to spend the money as long as it's worth the money.  Thanks ladies, as always, very helpful!

Side note... I wish I would've registered for two convertible seats.  People told me to register for what you'll want when they are 6 months to a year and I thought that seemed so far off and it didn't make sense to me.  Of course now it does!

  • We have the Evenflo Triumph Advance in both cars and I love it. Love it. The strap system is awesome and so easy to loosen or tighten. It was super easy to install (both by latch in my car and by seat belt in DHs).
