A coworker and I were talking this weekend about saying pregnant vs knocked up. She said that knocked up is only appropriate when the couple isn't married and that if you are married its "trashy" to say you are knocked up. I had never heard that before. To me, the term is interchangeable with pregnant. Thoughts? Just curious!
Re: Pregnant vs knocked up
Hmm...I would tend to agree that the phrase 'knocked up' is trashier than 'pregnant' - at least around here. It could be a regional thing.
Knocked up is kind of trashy in my opinion, and I never use it IRL, no matter what the relationship status of a person might be. The only context I use it in IRL is joking with friends.

If we are going 100% by etiquette, knocked up would be extremely rude to call someone unmarried. The more polite term would be "in a family way". Unless you were talking about her behind her back.
Either way, I prefer OMGPREGGERZ!!
(I couldn't resist. I would use KU and Pregnant)
I agree with this
LMAO!!! I use ku or pg on here... I can't say I've ever said "knocked up" IRL...
This for me too.
My grandmother told me it was an extremely crude term when she was young, in her 20s. She told me this after I used the term.
Or, alternatively: 'My eggo is preggo'.
Well, obviously. That is only said in the politest of society
When I hear the phrase 'knocked up' I think of it being an accident. I'd stick with pregnant.
This.
This exactly.

I agree. I only use KU here because a) it's the norm. & b) it's quicker to write than "pregnant"
I think the only time I ever said "knocked-up" IRL was when gossiping about someone I didn't like who got his gf KU.

I work on a postpartum unit, stuff like this comes up all the time, lol
This exactly!
I guess it all depends on the context and your experience. The 2 months I have spent on this board have led to me equating the word "preggo" with fingernails on a blackboard.
Lol, yeah, sorry...didn't mean to come off rude. It's just funny to disect the term "knocked up". i don't have a problem with the term, but, maybe if some random dude knocked me up then i would have a problem with it. haha:)
Oh, I didn't think you were rude. No worries!
Besides, its slow in here! Gotta find something to talk about

ok, phew
i'm on my best behavior on this board, but sometimes the real jen comes out;) sometimes i feel really different than the other girls on this board. like the word preggers....i totally don't mind it at all. but i know it drives everyone else here totally bazirk (sp?). i'm one of the older girls here (32 years old) and yet there's a good possibility i'm the least mature
Totally agree!
word.
I always prefer "pregnant." I prefer it over "pg" (though I've typed that here before), "knocked up" or KU, "preggo", and "preggers". I just like the official terms. I also don't like "BD" or "baby dance" (though I've used them here), preferring "sex". I even don't like to say AF.
I think that knocked up is a casual way of saying pregnant. I originally associated it with being unmarried or as an accident, but more people are using it now in all contexts, so now I think they are pretty much interchangeable.
On here, I sometimes use KU.
IRL I always use pregnant, unless I'm gossiping about someone that I don't really like getting pregnant (especially if it was on accident). I do agree, it does sound trashy. However, I do think that I have used the KU term frequently in the past week in reference to my brother and his gf.
