Pregnant after a Loss

Do you get an U/S at first appt after miscarriage?

I know it varies doctor by doctor whether you get an ultrasound at your first appointment, but if its your first appointment after a miscarriage, do they usually do ultrasounds??

I would love to have the piece of mind of just seeing the baby...

My appointment's on Thursday at 8w2d... I never made it to my first appointment last time, since it was scheduled for 10 weeks, so I'm just really hoping for a very thorough, long, reassuring appointment... like we all are.  :)

  • I had a "pregnancy confirmation" appointment before my "cob" (complete OB) appointment. At the pg confirmation appointment, the midwife ordered my betas and first u/s. First u/s was at 6w6d; COB was at 9w1d. If they don't order an ultrasound, you can always ask. The worst they'll say is "no." However, in my experience, explaining to your practitioner that your nerves are heightened due to a previous m/c, you're able to get a little extra confirmatiob/reassurance.

  • Yes, I had an u/s. However, at my midwife's practice it is standard to get an u/s at both the 8 and 12 week appointments.
  • I did... they do a "Viability u/s" at my OB office for each pregnancy between 6-7 weeks.

I had about the same experience. If you explain that you had a previous m/c they should be more proactive about this pregnancy.

  • I had an appointment scheduled for just over 8w but I had spotting at 7w so they got me in early at 7w 3d and I had one then. Then I went back for my "real" appointment the next week and had another one. After then I had the NT scan at 12w, a gender "guess" scan at 18w and the anatomy scan at 20w.

  • Okay - good information!  Thank you!

I guess I will just call my OB's head nurse, who I have really bonded with, and ask if I can get squeezed in for one.  I just feel VERY different with this pregnancy than any of my other ones (completely different, more intense symptoms, but also lots of cramps), so I'd like to at least see what's going on there.

  • After getting betas tested in week 4, I expressed concerns about not having any of of knowing everything was ok until week 8.  So they suggested I come in at 6 weeks for viability u/s, which I of course agreed to.  It definitely gave me piece of mind!
  • After my first m/c (actually, turns out is was my second), I got my u/s right away...I wasn't much into the 5th week.  I got one at 7 weeks again and at 9 1/2 weeks until I miscarried again.  This is my 5th pregnancy right now and the only reason I am not getting one this week is that I am out of town.  I never had to ask for it, but if you do, you do....do what is best for you and what would make you feel at ease.

    Good luck!

  • My doc doesn't do anything differently for the first appt after a m/c (at least for 1 m/c, I'm not sure about multiples).  I did end up having 2 u/s before my 1st appt at 10 weeks, because I had some spotting at 5w5d.  I had a u/s that day, and then a f/u on on 6w5d to check the HB because we didn't see it the week before.  Had I not had the spotting I wouldn't have had them prior to the appt (as nice as they were, I would have traded them for not having spotting, just to relieve the anxiety).

Have fun at your 1st appt!!!!!!

  • My doc brought me in for an u/s at 6 weeks because he knew I was nervous (I'd asked him to check my progesterone when he did my betas, which is not something they normally do - instead of doing that, he offered an u/s... I accepted!).  I'm not sure if I'll get another one at my next appointment or not - it will be my "official" first appointment.

  • Yes my doctor was very proactive and had me come in at 6 weeks and again at 8 weeks to check for progress.
