How was your induction if you were barely dilated?

I am going in on Sunday to be induced and am only a fingertip dilated.  I am afraid its going to turn into a 3 day affair or c/s.  Any positive stories out there for inductions that started with minimal to no dilation

  • I was only 1cm when I was induced. It was a 2 day affair (30 hours) but ultimately ended up in the vaginal delivery I wanted. GL!

  • I was only 1-2- had my boy after 7 hours of labor at 39weeks. GL!!
  • I know this isn't what you asked for but I was only a finger tip, was induced and after 26 hours, ended in C-Section.

Go for the C!  Recovery was a piece of cake and baby is healthy and wonderful!

  • I had a folly bulb induction because I was 41 weeks and one day pregnant and my doctor was trying to avoid C-section at all cost due to scar tissue issues related to another surgery.  I had the bulb implanted at 3pm on a Wed.  by 10 that night it popped out but at 5 am I was still only three, I was fingertip before the bulb was put in, because I was not progressing I was put on Pitocin at 5 am and did not have her till 7:59 p.m. Thursday. My doc was hoping I could avoid pitocin but since I was not progressing it was needed.  It was a very slow process and my doctor thought I was going to end up with a C .  That is the big risk with induction because your body is not ?ready? for labor your chances of needing a C go up.  Ask your doc about starting with a folly bulb.

Shortly after she put the foley in I started having mild contractions. She let me go home and have dinner and I went back at 9.  The nurse gave me a sleeping pill and that was great because I got a good night sleep.  At 9:30 in the morning the contractions got bad and I got an EPI and was good.  My doc was wonderful and I credit her with me not having to have a C.  She watched the baby closly just to make sure she was not in destress at all.  GL

  • I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I was a fingertip dialated at 39w4d and was induced because of a heart condition. My induction started with overnight cervidil followed by pitocin. After 30 hours of labor, I had progressed to a 5, so DD was delivered via c-section because of failure to progress. The c wasn't so bad. The worst part was the exhaustion from 30 hour labor.
  • I was 9 days past due. I went in on Saturday to start induction with Cervidil, then the plan was start Pitocin on Sunday morning.

Within an hour or so of Cervidil, I was having regular contractions. In a couple of hours I was 2-3, then quickly 4. Got the epidural and my blood pressure crashed as well as baby's heart rate. Backed way off epi so I pretty much felt everything at that point. Once I stabilized I got more epi, and was then at 10cm. Pushed for 30min but baby wasn't tolerating it so they used a vacuum. I pushed her out on my last contraction they allowed me before we went to c-section.

12 hour labor and a 3rd degree tear. Over all though, it wasn't awful.

    Good luck!

  • I was induced at 40 weeks to the day, and wasn't even a finger tip dilated. I was induced around 5am, and gave birth at 6:29pm via vaginal delivery. It worked out fine, so try not to worry about the worst case scenario until you have to. :) Good luck!

This exactly! I was induced at 38wks because of a high leak in my water. I was still at 1-2 cm 6 hours after they started the pitocin. I asked for the Stadol so I could sleep. At midnight (6 hours later) I was 3 cm and I was in a lot of pain so I received the epidural. I finally delivered vaginally at 10:30am.

  • I was induced at 38 weeks. Was at 2cm when they started pitocin, 12 hours later I had my baby girl. Good luck!

  • Epidural was a big FAIL for me so hopefully yours works (if you opt to get one Big Smile)

  • I was 2 cm at 38w4d.  Took Cytotec at 11pm, delivered LO at 1145am vaginally.
  • i was induced, not dilated at all,10 days past my due date and had gestational diabetes. Not gonna lie,it was a hellish nightmare for me. induction is not fun cuz ur body is not ready(at least mine wasnt). went in on a monday night and had DD wednesday night with vaginal delivery, but was so close to having to have a c-section.
  • I was induced at 37 weeks for pre-e.  I was only a fingertip dilated, cervix was thick.  I thought for sure that I would end up with a C.  The plan was cervadil for 12 hours then start the pitocin the next day.  The cervadil was inserted at 6:30pm and 2 hours later taken out since it gave me such intense contractions, right on top of each other.  It was enough to kick start my labor.  DD was born vaginally at 5:03am, never even had to have pitocin.

    Exactly the same with me!

  • with my first daughter, I was a fingertip dilated.

cervidil at 7pm, they had to pull it out a few hours later because I was contracting like crazy, I had her at 3:21 the next morning.  They said that was pretty opposite of "text book" but you wanted hope! :-)  it could be THAT quick!

  • i was closed up tight.  went in on a sunday night, got the stuff to ripen my cervix around 9-ish (sorry don't remember which they used), i think i had 3 rounds of it though the night.  around 8 or 8:30 the next morning i think i was about 1.5cm, OB came and broke my water and started pitocin and he was born at 6:51pm.  wasn't too bad, other than my epi stopped working and they couldn't get it started up again no matter how hard they tried.

  • i was 2/3 cm dilated and 75% effaced....and it was a 5 hour labor with 17 mins of pushing...i had a great experience...we had the pitocin drip at 12 for a good while....bumped it up after a few hours, then all the way to 36 (max) which got me to 10! ....

i'd recommend if you were at least 2cm....

if not...i'd wait it out just a little bit!

  • 60 hours and ended in a C-section.  Sorry.  I am sure that is not what you wanted to hear.  But recovery from the C-sections was easy.  Really!
  • I went in at 5 days past due. I was 1 cm at 7am. Doc broke my water right away and I ended up progressing on my own with no Pit. at all, which made me very happy. Got the epidural at 5cm. Slept from 5cm to 10cm. After 45 min of pushing, I had my LO at 8:35pm. It all went very smoothly.
  • 41.5 weeks along.  I was 1 cm and 50% effaced.  It took 42 hours but I had my baby and no c/s!
  • I went in 1 1/2 cm.

Balloon induction started at 6 pm.

    Dilated to a 4-5 by 4am.

    Pitocin started at 6am.

    10 cm at 5:00pm

Pushed through 4 contractions (15 minutes) and had our daughter at 5:39pm.

I had an amazing induction!!!!! There is hope for you :)

  • C/s after 92 hours. Wish we would have done it sooner - it was nothing. Good luck.
  • When I had my DD I was only a finger tip dilated broke my water started the pitocin and I had a vaginal delivery the whole process was 12 hours then this time around I was induced again but at a 3 and had a vaginal delivery in 5 1/2 hours.

Good luck hope you have a fabulous induction.

  • I was 10 days overdue when my doctor decided to induce me.  After 24 hours and no dilation, my doctor decided to do a c-section.  This turned out to be a great option because my son had passed meconium.
  • i was 1cm and 60% effaced. Induced at 40wk 2 days. I was having light contractions bout 8 min apart.

started pit at 8am, they broke my water at 1pm, epi at  3pm.  10 cm dilated at 6pm, labored him down till about 7:30, delivered at 8:26, but they made me stop pushing and wait for the ob for about 30 min (ouch) had a 2nd degree irregular tear. (ds was 9lbs 6oz)

Not to bad over all, but Pit doesn't make it easy...

  • my induction after fingertip dilation didn't work. I was 41.5 weeks and they started with cervidil. That only irritated my cervix. Then we tried the prostaglandin gel and that also only irritated my cervix. Got me to 2 cm after 18 hrs and the OB was able to do a stretch and sweep. That broke my water and got my into labour. Unfortunately, got me into labour too quickly and my body and the baby didn't tolerate it so we had an emergency c/s.

  • Mine ended in a c-section, but I was expectng that, since the pitocin did absolutely nothing even at max, and I was being monitored for polyhydramnios.  I feel I had a great birth experience though, no regrets for the c-section here.

  • I was induced at 39 1/2 weeks, only a fingertip dilated as well.  Went in the night before and was already having contractions (so light I couldn't feel), so cervadil was a no-go.  However, next morning had pitocin and an epidural.  Not much progress in the beginning, but was able to dilate, efface, and have a vaginal delivery after about 12 hours.
  • My water broke at 38 weeks 5 days and I was not dialated or effaced.  After a day on pitocin I had made no progress so we opted for a c-section at that point (baby wasn't responding well to pitocin).  Recovery wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
  • My situation sounds a lot like yours--I had to go in Sun. night to get a pill inserted to help dilate me (inserted vaginally). After 2 doses of the pill, my cervix still didn't change much so Pitocin was started Mon. morning at 5 am. I had a painful labor and didn't get an epidural soon enough (not my choice), but by 6 pm that night after only 45 min. of pushing, I had my daughter!

Best of luck. Don't take to heart every horror story you hear about being induced. I did beforehand, and things were fine.
