Babies: 0 - 3 Months

DS will not sleep

I am just about at my wits end.  DS is 7weeks old and has not been a good sleeper at all since he was born.  He takes a pretty good morning nap in the swing then will sleep in the Moby after that.  At night he has been been sleeping midnight-6am and waking up twice (so like 2 hr stretches)  He isn't really hungry when he wakes up and sometimes after he eats he takes a long time to get back to sleep.  I try to put him to bed earlier and he will not sleep, but he is fussy awake.  Then, he will not go back to sleep after 6am.  I don't know what to do.  I also have a 2 yr old and 3yr old and DH is deployed.  My first DS was not a good sleeper either and at 5mos I did sleep training and he has been good ever since.  DS2 slept thru the night by 6 weeks.  I am just so tired and LO has been in my arms or moby for the last 5 hours.  I know it gets better...I just wish I had a way to make it better now.

Re: DS will not sleep

  • Sorry you're having such a rough time. I'm sure you already know this from your other babies, but it will get better! In the meantime, have you tried swaddling? My LO liked it for the first month or two- now he hates it, but it was really useful for awhile.

  • Man I can only imagine how difficult that must be. I have one DS and fear when DH deploys again. This is my one and only DS/LO so all I know is my experiences with him. He's been a really good sleeper...sleeps 10 hours since 5 weeks. BUT I do know that doing some comforting/swaddling/rocking with pacifier and blanket has helped a lot. We got him one of the "lovies" (the minature blanket with a stuffed animal head and arms) and he LOVES it. He goes right down when we give it to him. Also my mom helped me get him on a bedtime routine and that helped tremendously. We alternate nights. 1 night I do bottle, playing, bath, massage, PJ's, bottle and then bed. the next night I do the same thing without the bath, etc etc. It seems to really help a lot. GL!

  • You are not alone.  My DS is also 7 weeks and just survived (I think) another sleepless 2am-6am.  Baby sleeps 2-3 hour intervals during the mornings and afternoons.  Then he'll go into a deep sleep around 4/5pm, I guess to prepare for his "late night party".  This has been going on since he was 2wks.  I haven't tried a night routine of bottle/bath/pjs/etc., but from what I read in magazines and various online posts, it appears to work.  I'm going to try it tonight and hope it works.  Unfortunately it will cut into husband's bonding time (husband doesn't get home from work until 6pm on weekdays), but he can join in the routine and hopefully appreciate that his wife isn't so irritable with him when he is peacefully sleeping.  ; )

*Off to make another cup of coffee*
