crib question - what's the diff?

I've been crib hunting online lately, and am hoping that some of you who already have your nurseries done or are moms can help me make a decision about function - what are the pros/cons of cribs with a drop side? Most of the ones I've seen that I like don't have the drop side, but I'm wondering if I will regret not having that feature. Thanks for your help!

    Drop side should be hard to find now after all the massive recalls.

    Most makers are phasing out the drop-down side because they are unsafe.  If you are short, that would be one of the only pros to having one.

    Many drop side cribs have been recalled, especially lately.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.

    All drop sides were recalled due to safety issues.  I wouldn't get one

    I only used the drop side when I was PG w/ #2.  (DD2 moved out of the crib before I got PG this time.)  Most companies are trying to get away from them because it seems like most drop side cribs have been recalled at one time or another.

    There have been a lot of recalls due to drop side cribs not being safe.  I went for a stationary, but I'm sure there are still people who appreciate the drop side.

    I had a a drop side crib with my first baby. I never used the drop side feature. I have noticed though, a lot of the crib recalls in the past year or so have been one drop side cribs. If you get one, make sure to check it out extremely well... the type, company it is made by, and also the parts. A lot of the ones that have been recalled were because plastic parts were breaking.

    Drop sides have a LOT of safety recalls. They may be more convenient but I would personally not own one.

    We got the Graco Lauren crib and love it!  We wanted one that can grow with baby and yes drop down sides are now considered dangerous and are being phased out.

    Yep, pretty sure you don't want that feature. Big safety risk as the other ladies have said.

    I think government agencies are even considering banning drop side cribs.

    why is it unsafe? i never heard about this! the crib i used for my first daughter has a drop side and i was going to use it again cause its in good shape.

    Ditto other posters who spoke about safety.  I was scared about not being able to reach LO if the crib didn't have a drop side (IDK why because I am 5'6" with long arms).  To compensate for that I got a fixed side one that dips down in the middle.  This is it and all of the ones that I looked at have adjustable mattress heights too.  https://www.diapers.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?productId=14462

    I am short (5'2), and I have no problem reaching into our non-drop side crib, even with my big belly.

    Personally, I see no point on having a drop-side. They seem more dangerous than anything.

    Both my mom and MIL didn't understand how cribs couldn't be drop sides now. Then when they both saw our crib (baby cache heritage) they said that it was so much lower than theirs were so getting the baby out wouldn't be an issue.  You should just get the fixed crib you like.

    we never used the drop side with my brothers.... i was more interested in a convertible crib and matching furniture that will grow with the little beast (ours goes from crib to toddler bed to full size bed-- he's covered 'til he moves out!

    Drop side cribs are illegal in NY. I waned one for the convenience and went shopping and found that they can not be found since they are, like I said, illegal now. I think most states will follow suit soon so as the other ladies have said, probably go for stationary.

    Really?  I haven't heard this.  Illegal to sell?  I have one and feel like I have seen them lately.  

    The only time I think it will be an issue to have a stationary crib is once your little one can sit up on their own and pull up and if you are rocking them to sleep.  I know my LO was rocked to sleep (despite endless sleep books, etc.) for a long time and I don't see how I could have ever gotten him in there with the mattress dropped all the way down.  Maybe a step stool?

I'm short, I will soon be having a csection as well as major abdomenol surgery before baby is 6 months old. I like to have the option of drop side although when setting it up its stationary. I think the concern was that the drop sides were coming down on their own and baby was getting trapped, although I honestly don't see how that would be possible unless the side was broke.

    I think the problem is that they're fine until they break and who knows when that'll happen.  LO can get caught if they're present when it breaks.
