Infant Swim Lessons....

Any recommendations for infant swim lessons in the south metro area.
How old was your infant when you did the lessons?
What is fun/helpful?
Cost?
Where did you get the swim diaper thingy?!

Thanks. CB

I am going to take my ds to Foss swim school this summer. They have a heated pool and only teach classes for kids and babies. I like that the instructors are experienced in teaching kids. He will be around 9 months when we go but you can start them at 6 months. The community usually offers swim classes too which are much cheaper than Foss.  We picked up a swim diaper at babies r us yesterday.

  • I've heard to try Foss.  Or at least to make sure pool is heated since if the child is an infant and even young toddler, the class requires parent participation.  I've found swim diapers at target, BRU, Walmart, etc
  • We took DS when he was about 6 months old. We went through community ed, but the poor was really cold.

Foss, Wise, and lifetime have infant swim classes with a heated pool.

  • We are currently doing them through our city community ed. We went with them vs. Foss because the city was $55 and Foss was something like $200-$250. I agree with pp that the water can be cool. We actually think this is why DS seemed to hate it the first few times. Plus the class is 6 m to 3 years so it is a wide range of ages. I think if we did it again soon, we would go through Foss to get a more specialized (and warm) experience. The city pool might be warmer in the summer though. We have been going in the coldest time of winter!

  • We're also currently doing swimming lessons through Community Ed (So. Wash. County) - $39 for 8 weeks.  We did it last year as well when my DS was about 14 -16 months, now he's 2 (23-25 months) - the program also starts at 6 mos. old.  I think the program is fine for his age.  Everything is supported by the parent who is also in the pool and they teach them how to float, fick, paddle etc. as well as play with some fun toys and sing songs/play games.  When he's a little older we will probably consider Foss, but for now it's fine just to get him used to the pool.  The water at Lake Jr. High is warm too.

BRU, Target, Walmart, Sams, etc. have the Little Swimmers.
  • I have DS signed up for swim classes at Wise (in Apple Valley) that start next week, so he will be almost 11 months.  I think it costs $160-180.  You can buy disposable swim diapers (Little Swimmers) at Target, Walmart, BRU, just about anywhere you would buy regular diapers.
