If you didn't use a Bundle Me in the winter....

What did you do to keep the baby warm? I bought an imitation bundle me at a craft show back in April. Before I knew that bundle me's are not recommended for use in car seats. The lady who sold it to me said how thick jackets are bad for babies to wear in car seats and how the cover she sold me was so much safer, which I believed. But now I am finding out that these aren't safe to use...so what did you do in the winter? Obviously blankets but did you put a winter jacket on baby and then put them in the car seat? Funny how I'm thinking of this when it's 80 outside :)

Re: If you didn't use a Bundle Me in the winter....

  • IMHO, I'd rather use one of those "bundle me" covers than fumble with a winter jacket and such around baby.  We used a carrier cover with DD (just the generic one I bought at Walmart) and I honestly think it's safer because you don't put anything that could change the secure factor of the baby and the seat whereas with the bulky winter jacket it's going to put a "cush" layer that would instantly pack down in an accident between the baby and the straps.  I think it's also safer than blankets because there always was air movement and not a smothering around the face as there is with using layer upon layer of blankets especially when it gets bitter cold.  I also watched my niece who was in a plush winter snowsuit go into some funky state from overheating in it.  It was downright scary!

Whenever we went anywhere with DD we'd put her in the "bucket", then we'd wrap the appropriate number of blankets over her body... then we'd zip up the cover and off to the car we'd go.  We never had issues with her getting too warm or too cold..

  • The shower-cap style covers. Actually - the Bundle Me isn't considered safe by CPST's for the exact same reason as a winter jacket - they interfere with the harness system - the slots don't always match up, and you don't want extra bulk under the baby.

  • Ditto Michelle, we used the cap over the car seat. For DS now, I keep a coat in the car and he puts it on before he gets out. We also keep a blanket in there if he wants to use it.
  • there's that shower cap style thing that's like a bundle me but not unsafe.
  • We just used the car seat cover and i tucked blankets around her. I always made sure to dress her warm enough if we went somewhere and kept extra blankets handy.
