Should I call the on-call pedi?

Yes I am making one of these posts!

My daughter has been on amoxicillin for 2 days and today she developed a mild rash on her torso and face.  I called the doctor's office and they are closed for Good Friday.  Dr. Google says that a rash is a somewhat common side effect of amoxicillin and probably not an allergic reaction or an indication to stop the medicine.

So I feel like it doesn't really warrant a call but on the other hand it still makes me nervous.

  • meh.  i say call to make yourself feel better.  our on call nurse is always super nice about those kinds of questions.

  • I'm allergic to penicillin and get a rash on my torso and face. I was told to stop the meds and never have penicillin again.  It can be much worse than a rash the next time.

I'd ask for the Zpack for her.

  • I would wait and see if it gets any worse or better.  As long as she isn't in any respiratory distress and is acting fine, then I am sure she is fine.

But then again if we call the on call nurse we are charged unless we go to the ER or in for an office visit the next day...

  • Morgan had the same reaction a few weeks ago.  I asked the pedi about it at his appointment on Monday and he said that's really common.

He ended up having 2 ear infections so we tried a different antibiotic (omnicef?) and he hasn't had a rash, but horrible diarrhea.

I wouldn't worry about it.  The rash went away as soo as we were done the amoxicillan

  • DD developed a rash when she was on Augmentin...after being on it for like 5-6 days!  It started on her torso but ended up spreading everywhere...especially after a bath!  We were told to stop taking it and they changed her prescription.

    I would call the after-hours on-call nurse.

  • if its just a mild rash and isn't bothering her, I wouldn't call them.  If it gets worse in a day or two or she has other symptoms, I would call.

  • Dd just got a rash after the IV she had. I put baby gold bond powder and it started to go away. I called the doc and he said it' s not anything to really worry about but for myself to feel better I could bring her in. I decided to go the next day ( today) but it wad gone. It wasn't raised or itchy. I hope the rash goes away Quickly

  • I would call, just to err on the side of safety. Allergic reactions can be mild to severe, or it could just be a side effect. The doc would know.

Charlotte was on amoxicillin and after 3 days she developed a rash on her face and neck.  I called the nurse, she told me to bring her in immediately because she is probably allergic.  I took her in that night and the pedi said it had nothing to do with the medicine but he wasn't sure what was causing it as we hadn't given her new foods, detergent, etc..

He told me to continue the medicine and to put cortisone cream on the rash.  It went away after 2-3 days.

I am not a Dr. nor do I play one on TV but my point is, the nurse had me freaked out and the Dr. took one look at her and could tell right away it was not caused by the medicine.

  • AJ gets a rash from it, but I know that and still call every time it happens. I say call and get the reassurance you need.

This, except it's my nephew who is allergic to penicillin and got the rash. He was taken off it right away and given another antibiotic.

  • I would call! My friend just had this same experience two days ago and it turns out her DC was having an allergic reaction to that medicine.

I'm guessing because allergic reaction to those types of antibiotic start as a rash and can quickly cause life-threatening problems.  I'm guessing the nurse was playing it safe by having you come in.

  • an amox rash IS really common and doesn't necessarily mean allergic.  However, penicillin allergy is definitely a possibility, too.  I'd call to be safe - they may tell you to stop the med, they may telll you to just keep an eye on it.
