Minnesota Babies

Insurance Question XP from 1st Tri

Two days before my BFP I got laid off at work.

1.  Not eligible to be on DH's insurance....he only has self coverage, no option for spouse/depend.

2.  COBRA is around $600/mo--too much especially since I am not currently working

3.  Most likely, my next job will offer reimbursement for an individual health policy (I'm returning to the nanny world).  Individual policies either offer NO labor/delivery coverage or only after having the policy for 12+ months

Any suggestions??  Once I get a job I don't think I would be eligible for any state funded health programs (and I can't stay unemployed for the length of my pregnancy).

TIA

Re: Insurance Question XP from 1st Tri

  • First you need to go get state funded insurance, you and your baby need it.  The thing about getting a job while being on state funded insurance and being pregnant is that the state will cover you until your new insurance kicks in.  I was once in the nanny world and know that that insurance is not always the greatest, and expensive.  So when you do get a job talk to your agent that is supporting your state funded medical about options, state vs. your work because you may be able to stay on the state and pay less than you would by taking the work option.

  • Yikes. Similiar situation for me too:

We got the BFP (not planned!) right during my internship which didn't offer insurance or benefits of any kind. We tried everything you just described too and finally got approved with Medical Assistance. It covers everything. Apply through your county. Even if you make too much for that, you might still qualify for MN Care and then there's a very small fee every month for that coverage and no copays.

Let us know how this works out!
