Daycare vs. Nanny in Chicago

I'm trying to decide between daycare or hiring a nanny when I have to go back to working full time after my maternity leave.  The daycare at my work is $300 a week which sounds really high to me (I'm on the waiting list just in case).  What do other parents pay for daycare service or for a nanny?  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Re: Daycare vs. Nanny in Chicago

  • I think that's actually very reasonable! I am a nanny, full-time, and I get paid FAR over that...I guess it just depends on how many kids are in each room and how many people are working in each room. I think you definitely pay more for that personal attention!

Nannies are very expensive (at least quality ones). I have a Bachelor's degree and am working on my Master's, am CPR certified, First Aid trained, and drive...so I cost a bit more than someone without all of that. I also have over 8 years of experience as a nanny.

Personally, I think 300 dollars a week is extremely reasonable...especially if it's quality childcare and it's at your work (convenient!!)

    Does anyone agree with me?

  • $300 is cheap.

In the city, nannies usually run around $12-15 per hour and that doesn't include paying for the required employer taxes, unemployment, Medicare, etc.  It is even more if the nanny wants you to cover his/her part of the taxes described above or wants $12-15 net not gross.

  • I'm new at this too so I can only share what I've found.  From the research I've done I'm expecting to pay 500/week.  That being said in my opinion $300 sounds reasonable.  Hopefully more people will respond so we can all get a good idea of what typical costs really are.

    $300 is a steal!

  • Thanks for the info ladies.  Apparently I'm getting a good deal.

  • I just put a deposit down on a daycare which will run us 1800 a month, so 300 is definitely a steal (per week). The one we're using is a bit more expensive than others I've seen, but I felt more comfortable with it.
  • One other option you have is a nanny share, that's what we intend to do.  Basically you share the nanny with one other family you or the other family hosts, or you share back and forth, and you split the cost.  Not only will your LO have interaction with another baby but the cost will be better and you will have that personally interaction you get with a nanny.

  • The day care we are looking at is $1500 a month ($375 per week) for the youngest group of children. So $300 and at your work, I would go for it.

Maybe once we have more kids then we will think more about hiring a nanny vs. daycare. I know some others that have switch after having more children and do save money plus the extra attention their children get, its been worth it for them.
