NPR: If you have migraines

What do you take that you love? I'm taking Fioricet and it was working pretty good for years but in the last two weeks it hasn't even touched my migraines and I'm suffering.

I called my Dr.'s office and am waiting for a call back.

Would love any other suggestions on meds.

  • I take Imotrex.  I can't say that I love it because it makes me sleepy (I *have to sleep for an hour or two after I take it) - but it works every time for me.

Have you considered a preventative med?  I've been taking Topomax and it cut my migraines way down.   I used to have several a month and now I've had maybe 3 in the last 6 months.

  • I would probably try a preventative one if it were safe during pregnancy. We are going to start TTC next month so I'm not sure what I'd be able to be on.

I usually only have migraines for the first trimester then they disappear until after the baby is born so hopefully that will happen this time too if I get pg :)

  • this sounds so lame- but I only got migraines during pregnancy (thank god- they are a nightmare, and I am SO SORRY you have to deal with them.) but I was too paranoid about taking anything major, and I really did benefit from a pepsi (or a coke) and two tylenol as long as I caught it at the slightest twinge.

it did nothing once the migraine was in full effect- but I really think it helped prevent them if I caught them soon enough. and it was totally safe during pregnancy.

    good luck!

Yeah, a little caffeine and tylenol worked when I was pg with the boys but outside of being pg (for some reason I don't know) it doesn't help at all. The last week or two I've had a constant low and dull pain in my head that goes away for a bit but not fully no matter how much I take and it's driving me BSC. Hopefully the doc will call back soon.

  • I take Treximet which the med in Imitrex (sumatriptan) mixed with naprosyn.  It's gotten rid of every single migraine with the first dose.
  • I know that Imitrex isn't safe for pregnancy.  My migraines actually went completely away when I was pregnant, thankfully.  But my OB gave me a Rx for phenogran, which most people get for m/s.  I get really nauseous with my migraines, so he thought that might help.  I never took it during pregnancy, but when I was hard up afterwards (my Imitrex ran out), I used it in combination with Tylenol - it completely took away my nausea and my general feeling of fatigue and while my headache didn't completely go away, it was managable.  So that might be something to look into when you get pregnant.

  • Maxalt with an Aleve chaser.

Fioricet never worked for my migraines.

When I was pregnant, I'd get a narcotic....which didn't help much, led to rebound migraines a lot of the time.  I think it was percocet.

  • I take Imitrex.  I have taken a few others that didn't work.  Even though a coke and some Tylenol may put off a migraine they don't completely get rid of them for me.  I did take a preventative back in the day but like you said they aren't safe while pregnant.  For that matter even my Imitrex is not approved for use during pregnancy.  My OB and pharmacist told me not to take it in the first trimester but after that I could take it if I really needed to.  Luckily I was able to deal with any headaches/migraines I got while pregnant so I never had to take the Imitrex.  I believe the only RX that they give out during pregnancy for migraines are pain killers.  Now that I am lactating our pedi and pharmacist to me that I have to pump and dump when I take the Imitrex.  There just isn't enough evidence that migraine meds are safe to take while pregnant or BF'ing.

Good luck.  I completely understand the position you are in.

  • I take three preventative medications daily. None of them are FDA approved for migraines but they have been shown to help. An antizeisure medication, a blood pressure medication and antidepressant. I have a few different medications for when I do get a migraine. There are seven or so medications in the Triptan family which is the most common class to treat migraines, Imitrex, Zomix, Treximet etc. They come in pill and Injection form and I hear they are coming out with a patch. Fiorecet causes major rebounds There are also anti-inflamatory medications that are helful like Indomethacin and then the usual narcotics like Percocet but they don't actually abort the migraine. Benedryl can be helpful to as well as caffine. I didn't see if you were pg? Migraines suck!
