Pregnant after 35

35/35 and nothing's done!

Hi all!  I'm just looking for some reassurance here.  I just realized I'm 35/35 and feel like we have nothing done and too little time left to get everything done.  The nursery is not done, or even painted (although painting is supposed to happen this weekend).  About the only thing we have is a crib and bedding (no mattress) and a high chair that we have to return because it was recalled.  Our shower is not for two weeks, so we don't want to buy things ourselves, but it's stressing me out not to have much of anything we need.  I thought I had a pediatrician recommendation, but that fell through.  AND, DH and I both have extremely busy work schedules through April.  Did I mention that my bathroom is still being renovated and the shower and sink is not installed yet because we can't get the contractor to commit to a day?

Please, somebody tell me this will all get done in the next couple of weeks!

  • Babies come all the time unexepected and sooner than we expect.  I'm not sure I would be 100% done even if the baby is on time.  Don't worry, you will be amazed what you can get done when you need to get it done.  Also, if the baby does come before you are "ready", I'm sure you will have support come out of the woodwork.  Everything seems to work out and will for you too!  G/L!

  • Don't worry.  Babies really need very little when they are newborn.

All you need is a carseat, diapers, wipes, diaper cream,  sleepers, a hat, receiving blankets and somewhere for them to sleep.  Everything else is optional.  Baby registries try to tell you you 'need' all these items but the ones listed above are what you really need.   Bouncers and swings are also optional.  While some babies love them many don't.  Most prefer to be in your arms!   And don't worry at all about the  highchair - you won't use it for months : )

  • I am 34 weeks 6 days so I am sneaking up on you.  I am almost in the same boat.  You can pick up the diapers and wipes on the way home, your mom can run out and get a car seat, and a laundry basket makes a good bassenet or they can sleep in the car seat.  Everything else is gravy.

  • Thanks ladies!  I appreciate the support, especially after just getting off a conference call with a judge who thought it was OK to give my opposing counsel three extra weeks to prepare their response to something I filed, while shortening my time to file a reply by a week and making it due AFTER I go out on maternity leave (less than one week before my due date).
  • The baby won't know nor remember if everything was perfect upon arrival!  As long as you have a car seat, diapers, a few clothes, a drawer (a place for LO to sleep), you and your LO will be good as gold.
  • If I can make you feel a LOT better....

I had everything done on my checklist before my daughter was born.  Nursery was all set up, and every little thing you can imagine was ready to go. I had everything on my registry that I thought we needed,.  It turns out, all we really needed for the first 7 weeks were the carseat, some onesies, diapers, wipes, bottles and burpcloths.  That's it!!!!  We didn't put her in the crib until 7 weeks when she was finally sleeping 6+ straight hours in the night.  Before that, I was nursing her around the clock, so the crib was pointless!

You will be just fine and the unfinished stuff will come together, I promise!!!

Haha! From a mom who really used a laundry basket  ... it's shocking how little you need! (BTW, I had a crib, bassinet etc etc ... laundry basket w/ a firm pillow next to me on the couch worked better) .... I really needed nothing but the bare minimum for at least a month AND I panicked just as you are ... hard to let go of the perfectionist in you ;) You shall survive! xo
