TTC after 35

Ovulation Tests?

So wahts a good test to buy? I have never used one and dont even know what they measure or when to use it. LOL I know basically when I ovulate but never used the tests. I figure since I have never had a child and I am 37 it could not hurt to try them out. Really would like to get pregnant on our honeymoon this April. We shall see. If not practice is always fun!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Ovulation Tests?

  • They detect luteinizing hormone (LH) which surges about 24-36 hrs before ovulation.  Most of them have a control line and a second test line...kinda like a pregnancy test.  The shading of the line is also an indicator of how much LH you have in your system.  Since it can be hard to read the results most women like to use the CBE (clear blue easy) digital OPK's which alert you to ovulation with a smiley face...much easier to read.

SInce you have never charted or anything like that they say to start on cd7 and continue until you get a positive OPK.

Another suggestion would be to get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It has a lot of good info and explains how to chart.

    GL to you!

  • I used clear blue and liked them.  It's a "digital" test so there's not diagnosing on your own if the test line is darker than the control line or not (it's still in the test stick, in case you want to see it on your own, but you get a smiley face if the LH surge is detected).  For me, it worked best to test before lunch after not drinking much in the am (just my usual coffee, not additional water).  I'd tried testing later in the day, but had drank too much by then and didn't get a clear reading.

  • I used the First Response a few times and they were fine for me.  It is useful to know when its happening.  Also, if you track for a few months without getting any positives for ovulation, then its something to get checked out.  Keep in mind, though if you are recently coming off of BCP, you probably won't ovulate normally or maybe not at all for a couple of months, so I personally wouldn't waste money on them if that is the case.  Congratulations on getting married and have fun on your honeymoon!
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...
