Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Whole milk, 2%, or toddler formula?

So, with DD turning one, we are now working on changing over to milk.  I was going to do whole milk.  I talked to DCP yesterday and she said she does 2% because of the fat content and her girls tummies couldn't handle it.  Enfamil now has a toddler formula that I was looking at the other day.  We have DD's 12 month check up on Monday so I will ask her ped, but I was also wondering what you ladies think.  Should we ask DCP to stock whole milk?  Should we just go straight to 2%?  Or with the toddler formula, should we do a mix of 2% milk and formula?

  • We do whole milk (and breast milk).  Pedi recommended it until two years, and ds has had no problems with it.  This is just us though!

  • We have mostly done whole milk since 1....used toddler formula for a few days to use up the free samples we got and will use 2% when out b/c that is what a lot of places serve.  At two I plan on stepping down to 2% b/c of the fat content

  • We tried everything with DS; whole mike, goat milk, soy milk, and tod formula... he liked the soy even though he does'nt have any allergies

  • I went to whole milk.  If your child doesn't eat well, then maybe 1 sippy of formula to serve as a "vitamin" for the day.
  • We did whole milk until today and now are starting 2% since shes turning 2 tomorrow.

The fat content in whole milk is important for brain development.

  • We are doing whole milk per ped's advice.

My mom said when I was little, she was told 2% because of the fat content possibly upsetting my stomach too and was very worried that DD would have problems, but she's had no issues.  She occassionally has 2% or skim and hasn't objected to either.

This...now is not the time to worry about fat content unless their tummy doesn't tolerate it well.

  • we do whole milk.  I thought that the AAP had changed their recommendations on the whole vs 2% thing though.  I think that if there is a family history of obesity, heart disease, etc, then you are supposed to start with 2%.
