I'm trying to decide between daycare or hiring a nanny when I have to go back to working full time after my maternity leave. The daycare at my work is $300 a week which sounds really high to me (I'm on the waiting list just in case). What do other parents pay for daycare service or for a nanny? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
Re: Daycare vs. Nanny in Chicago
I think that's actually very reasonable! I am a nanny, full-time, and I get paid FAR over that...I guess it just depends on how many kids are in each room and how many people are working in each room. I think you definitely pay more for that personal attention!
Nannies are very expensive (at least quality ones). I have a Bachelor's degree and am working on my Master's, am CPR certified, First Aid trained, and drive...so I cost a bit more than someone without all of that. I also have over 8 years of experience as a nanny.
Personally, I think 300 dollars a week is extremely reasonable...especially if it's quality childcare and it's at your work (convenient!!)
Does anyone agree with me?
$300 is cheap.
In the city, nannies usually run around $12-15 per hour and that doesn't include paying for the required employer taxes, unemployment, Medicare, etc. It is even more if the nanny wants you to cover his/her part of the taxes described above or wants $12-15 net not gross.
This.
$300 is a steal!
Thanks for the info ladies. Apparently I'm getting a good deal.
The day care we are looking at is $1500 a month ($375 per week) for the youngest group of children. So $300 and at your work, I would go for it.
Maybe once we have more kids then we will think more about hiring a nanny vs. daycare. I know some others that have switch after having more children and do save money plus the extra attention their children get, its been worth it for them.
