Tiger Balm

I'm not finding very good answers on the internet.

Has anyone talked to their doctor about Tiger Balm?  Active ingredients are Camphor (same as Vicks), Menthol, and Capsicum Extract.

I am reading that Camphor is a no-no, but Vick's is OK?  But Camphor is in Vick's, so I don't understand.

I have a pinched nerve in my shoulder and I'm about to cry because it hurts so bad.  If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Re: Tiger Balm

  • I use Vicks right now because I have a bad cough and my Dr said it was fine....Did you try taking a hot shower and just letting the water beat right one it? I also have one of those "hot packs" that are filled with rice or beans and you throw them in the microwave. They are amazing I used it religiously when I had really bad period cramps!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • A hot shower and heating pad are in my future when I get to lay down.  It's going to be amazing and I've been daydreaming about it all day! But I have some running around to do now :(

Now that I think about it, I might have some of those stick-on heating pads!

  • I found an IcyHot patch and I think those are OK!  Active ingredient Menthol.

    Off to research more.

  • Try the Tiger Balm stick patches. They last a very long time and the camphor is a lot less if that is what you are worried about. Other than that Tiger Balm should be fine. My mom used it on her last pregnancy for her hip pain, and it was one of the few things that worked long term for her. But yup heat is great too :)
  • I specifically asked about IcyHot and Tiger Balm patches yesterday and my OB said either is okay! (miracle worker for my sciatica pains last night!)
  • I personally would stay away from it. I know how strong that stuff is? My husband actually asked me tonight if I would put it on his back and I declined. I dont even want it on my hands, nevermind in my bloodstream.
