upset and confused about dr. appt

I had my f/u from the d&c and my dr. said something that was unsettling to me. This is the dr. who did my d&c and not the same dr. that I saw throughout the pregnancy. I may have misunderstood her, but she said that there was no fetal tissue and that she thought it was a blighted ovum.

I am very confused by this, because I had 3 u/s this pregnancy that showed a baby right on schedule. The first showed a fetal pole and sac, second showed a baby AND heartbeat, and the 3rd (which showed the m/c) was a little gummy bear with definite stubs for arms and legs. Her answer to my bringing these u/s up was that the machine isn't perfect and she couldn't really explain it. WTF? I don't get it. I had a BO and I thought it was only that if no baby developed. So my worry is that, (A) the baby is still in there (B) I am going completely nuts and will never be able to believe my eyes or anything I hear again. Anybody have any insight? I am just really disturbed by this for some reason.

I agree it is disturbing but there are things you can do. Call your dr. tell them your concern. Your blood levels should be way low if not zero after a d and c because they get evertthing. You could also ask for another ultrasound. You should feel comfortable with the results. Just keeping pushing till you get real answers. Good Luck and hugs.

That doesn't make sense to me either. I totally understand the u/s machine not being perfect when it comes to measurements (and that combined with the tech's ability).

But I don't understand how the machine could pick up a heartbeat if there wasn't one. If there was a heartbeat, it wasn't a blighted ovum.

I would call your doctor (the one who did the u/s), and make an appointment. I assume she'll have the d&c report so she'll be able to see exactly what was written. I would also want to get to the bottom of this. GL - I hope you can get an appointment soon.

From my understanding the information she gave me today was what they found the day of the d&c. Then, they sent it in for testing and I have not gotten the results back. Should be another week or two. I am just confused. Hopefully I will get some good answers soon.

HUH?? This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. She must have been wrong in what she said. Could she have been looking at your chart from another m/c???

You definitely need to call back and ask what she said or ask for them to read you the results again.

Could she have meant that there is no tissue left inside of you????

There is NO way it was a BO if you had an u/s that clearly showed the h/b. Yes, u/s machines can be "off" sometimes.....but they aren't that ancient! There is no way the u/s "mistakenly" showed a h/b.......unless the tech was a complete moron. I'm assuming they showed you the h/b on the screen and amplified the sound for you?

This is too weird.....I am going to be wondering about this all night! You have to call back in the morning and let us know.....

Also, was she even looking at your chart when she was saying this stuff?? Maybe she was thinking of another patient??

I hope you get some answers....

Oh.....also, you can always request copies of the pathology report and other reports....you have a right to see them....you could do that so you could read it for yourself (if you want....)

Yes, they showed me and DH the heartbeat and we heard it. Her reasoning for this was that it could have been a blood vessel. BUT that is not what the U/S tech said and I very clearly have an u/s pic with labels on baby and yolk sac. The vessel thing makes no sense to me. I hate how I always feel so rushed and feel like I never get all my questions answered when I go to the dr.

A blood vessel?? This story is getting weirder and weirder. If your doctor confirms that it was indeed a blood vessel.....you go back in there and demand that the u/s tech get FIRED. That is ridiculous! I really don't think a blood vessel would look the same as a h/b......they wouldn't be able to "measure" the bpm of a blood vessel. This is so bizarre....I'm so sorry that on top of everything you have been through you have to deal with this.

You deserve to have your questions answered. In fact, if it were me, I would demand another appt. asap and I would ask them to explain everything in detail and I would definitely ask to see copies of the u/s and have them explain where this "blood vessel" was and how the tech was wrong.....

That tech needs a new job if she did that to you.....that is so wrong.....

Do we go to the same doctor? They tell me insane things too. This is why I am switching dr's after this f-ing nightmare....It doesn't not make ANY sense to me....The ONLY thing I can I think of is perhaps the fetus got re-absorbed by your body? I don't think so, but that is the ONLY thing I can think of. It is strange. I swear, these doctors make bad situations even worse by giving wrong information. I am so sorry.

Rose - I thought that might be what happened too, but my D&C was only two days after the last u/s. I just don't get it. I mean, I have f-ing pics. The same ones that are in my chart.

Oh boy, I am so sorry you have to deal with this confusing information right now! Had you bled at all prior to the d&c ... is it possible that you could have passed any of the tissue. I know it's a long shot because you probably would have known, but I can't imagine what else could have happened. In my understanding, if you saw a heartbeat, there had to have been a baby ... that's just logical, isn't it?

Call your other doctor, I hope they can shed some light on it for you! Good luck!
