Well, I *thought* DH and I had picked a name for DD2. Ellen Kay. But just in the last day, I've already soured on the name Damn it! I know I have 16 more weeks but I just want the name settled already. With Katie, we had her name picked before we even knew if she was a boy or girl.
I talked to a friend of mine that had her second daughter in August. They named her Haley Margaret. (Margaret after my friend's late Grandmother). She told me that she now wishes she had used Margaret as the first name. But it's too late to change it. Keep in mind, they didn't even pick the name until the baby was two days old.
So that got me thinking- do I really LOVE Ellen? And I don't. I like it. I really like the nickname, Ellie. But I don't want to just name her Ellie (just in case she wants to go by something more professional sounding later in life.)
So what the heck? Now we are back to square one. Frick on a stick, this is hard.
So should I keep trying to come up with a name I (and DH) love or pick a name that I like and will hopefully learn to love??
Re: I give up. I really do. (PR: baby name)
lol
you're going to be like us - we didn't name Joseph until he was 2 days old
My old boss named her daughter Elizabeth and called her Ellie. Just a thought. You can go with something other than Ellen.
We had WAY more girl names than boy names and ended up having a boy--of course! That's just how it goes. Good thing we both loved the name Jack or we would have been SOL completely!!!
I like that idea! Or Eleanor.
I say if you love Ellie, use Ellie. My full name is Mandie. Not Amanda. Sure, it's annoying having to correct people who assume my full name is Amanda (like every high school teacher I had)- but I never had an issue with my name being Mandie in the professional world. I had a great real estate career and was never taken less seriously because of my name, I think that idea is kind of silly.
I think Ellie is adorable and goes well with Katie. If you really want a full name, what about Elizabeth, Eleanor, Elise, Elaina?
(read it. you know you want to.)

See, I thought of that too. But Elle doesn't flow as well with our last name. I think we need a second syllable to break up the first and last name. Our last name starts with an "E" and if we used just Elle, it would sound like one word and weird.
And to pp, my DH thought of Elizabeth but I don't really like it.
I like the idea, but not with the mn Kay. Because then her name is Elle Kay, or to the ear, L K.
And my aunt used to work at this dinery truck stop kind of place in Ohio called LK and that's all I can think of.
I'm with Kel. Eleanor, Eleanora, Elena, Eliana...there's lots of ways to get to Ellie as a nn.
What about Eleanor or Elizabeth?
ETA: Clearly late to the party with these suggestions. lol
Exactly, Lori! My initials are L K E. So it would be weird to have just "Elle Kay".
I appreciate all the ideas but I just don't love any of the above names.
It really is a total PITA to come up with another girl name.
Mlf- you might be right. I'll talk to DH about just calling her Ellie.
Although, I wish he would just hop on board with Scarlett (my favorite). But alas, he won't.
I wanted to use the nn Ella when we were pregnant w/DD1. DH wanted to honor his Godmother (Isabelle) who had recently passed away. So, we named our DD Isabella and 90% of the time she goes by Ella.
Like the pps said, there are a lot of other names you could use to get the nn Ellie.
Names are hard. I know I was sooooo afraid that this baby would be a boy just because I only LOVED one name (and DH hated it)... it was such an awful feeling. I was happy she was a girl for the name alone, lol.
I think you need to pick something that you both LOVE. You'll find it.
What about Ella? A version of Ellen, but still sounds professional, etc.

You need to pick a REAL name you like and then base a nickname off of that ... not the other way around.
And ... you also need to stop beating me in scrabble. Its getting old

As a rule, I'm not a "make it up" kind of person for names...but there's always a time and place.
A friend from work liked Elliott for a girl, but her husband didn't like the boyishness of the spelling. They used Elliette, and call her Ellie.
Whatever, lady. You kicked my *ss the game before this one.
And I agree with your advice. That's how we got Katie. We loved Katherine and loved Katie even more.
Ellis, Ellison, Eliana, Eloise.
Just thinking of more!
I agree that it's nice to have a more "formal" name, then use Ellie as the nickname. And there are sooo many options (other than Ellen):
Elise, Eliza, Ellery, Elena, Ella, Eleanor, Elliott, Elissa, Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Isabelle
Anything on there that would work for both you and your DH (and your last name)?
ETA -- I'm slightly biased, because Eliza and Elise are both on my top 5 list for girls' names.
I was in the same quandary as you...REALLY wanting the nickname Ellie but not wanting to use it as the full name. We went through a lot of 'elle' names to get to ours and we ended up with Gabrielle Leigh...figuring not only do we get Ellie from her first name, but the last part of her first name and her middle name literally are Ellie. We also some times call her Elle Leigh just to be silly. At any rate, look for atypical ways to get Ellie out of names...other names we were thinking of to get Ellie were Anabel and Ellison. Ellison sounded too 'made up' for us, though. DH really didn't like Anabel.
ETA: And there isn't a day that goes by that I don't see or hear her name and I smile b/c it is perfect for us.

Oooh, I love Ellery.
Me too! I grew up with a girl named Ellery and I always thought it was a cool name.
