3 Day Transfer vs. 5 Day Transfer?

Hello,

I normally only lurk on this board (not sure why) but I am in the midst of IVF#1 and I am freaking out.    All along the RE has been telling us that we will do a 5 day transfer which would be Sunday October 5th.   Today the embryologist called and said that out of the 6 eggs that fertilized only 3 are doing well, the other 3 are grade 3.   Because of this they want to move our transfer up to tomorrow.    Everyting I have read said that the success rates are higher on a 5 day transfer.   Any words of encouragement?    Thanks for your help!

Re: 3 Day Transfer vs. 5 Day Transfer?

  • I've had two IVF's one was a 3dt transfer and the other was a 5dt. I got pg with the day 3 with twins, but later m/c.  My 2nd IVF which was the day 5dt failed. Day 3 was the better choice for me. My RE said it made more sense to tranfer them on day 3 so they could get back to their original environment. With IVF #3 I will transfer 3 on day 3! GL!!

  • I don't have links to the actual studies but there is a lot of conflicting evidence on this and overall I think it has been determined that neither necessarily has higher success rates. The clinic I go to is affiliated with one of the best hospitals/med schools in the country and they do a LOT of research and publish a lot, and they do 3 day transfers regularly. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you asked on SAIF I'm sure you'd find just as many success stories with 3 day transfers as with 5 (and my successful IVF - although we lost the babies much later - was a 3 day transfer).

  • I use to work for an RE and day three or day 5 are highly based on the quality of the embies before they are transferred and time wise. If they are "ready" then they need to get into the "oven." Success rates I have seen are based on the quality of the eggs not the day they go in. You want a higher grade on each one not what day they go. GL!
  • Thanks so much for your replies!   This whole process is so nerve wracking!

  • My RE only does 3 day transfers. I think it all really depends on the quality of the embryos, not when they are transferred. Good luck!

  • I had a 3 day transfer and it worked but I understand how you're feeling since I felt the same way.  I really, really, really wanted my embryos to be going strong and be good enough to wait out the 5 days.  But, I turned it around to think of it this way, we had three decent looking embryos on day 3, did I want to give them a chance inside me or did I want to risk letting them go to day 5 and then possibly be told that none of them made it?  I felt better knowing they were inside me.  We transferred the best two, I'm pregnant with one and the one we left to develop kept going and was frozen on day 5.  You still have a great chance of getting pregnant so don't let this one thing get you down.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I had a 3dt with 13 embies and I was very confused about that.  My clinic prefers to get them back into you ASAP.  I guess I can't question it now as I got my BFP this past Saturday.  Good luck to you and try not to worry too much about the transfer date.  I hope your embies continue to do well and you get a BFP as well.
