I notice that for the most part, at least in my life, my Christian friends are conservative, and my more liberal friends are not religious, some are atheist. Except my cousin, who is quite liberal and very much a Christian. So, if Jesus were in America today, would he support the healthcare bill, lol. You know, would he lean more to the right or to the left?
ETA: post inspired by the things mentioned in the UO thread...it's not totally random. ![]()
Re: What political affiliation do you think Jesus would be?
In all seriousness I think he'd be and Independent and lean left for some things and right for others
ETA: and I'm almost certain he would be disgusted with the establishment on both sides, kind of like he was with the Pharisees
True dat...and don't get me started on how disgusted he must be with religion. I also think he'd suprise people on both sides where he was conservative and liberal.
I think he'd lean left for most things (hello, Social Justice and taxes LOL), and right for others (pro-life). Although I could see him being pro-choice.
I think he'd be for the health care bill for sure.
i think he would be all for social justice he probably would give FDR a big pat on the back.
i'm not sure about the pro-life/pro-choice things since it's a matter of free-will and paying for your choices. are you not a sinner if you have no choice? kwim?
i think he'd be peeved about the separation of church and state, but i'm fairly certain he'd believe it was cool to let people choose to believe how they see fit (another one of the free will things).
The phenomena that being Christian is somehow thought to be more compatible with the Republican Party is one of the things that drives me BSC about American politics.
He's Jesus Christ. He died on the cross to save all mankind. He's not going to micromanage congressional legislative wording any more than He's going to bless your March Madness bracket or make sure I get good dental, kwim?
Of course I know what you mean- I'm asking for fun, and because I think my uber conservative christian friends think they're always acting/responding politically the way Jesus would, and that's just not true.
And I do believe Jesus cares about the well being of our teeth.
so what's with the free will thing then?
on free will if x, y, z?
Sorry - that came off snarkier than I meant it. I know what you mean, too.
I think it's one of those questions where people take a broad issue like social justice which everyone can agree Jesus would be for and try to translate it into what it means for them.
I think social justice would mean that Jesus would be anti-death penalty (as does my Church). But I'm sure social justice means for someone like, say, Sarah Palin that Jesus would be pro-death penalty (I don't know what her church says about it but I'm guessing they're pro). So Sarah Palin and I are both acting how we believe Jesus would want us to. Neither of us have a bigger political claim to Him.
haha, I have a book about this titled, "Was Jesus a Republican or a Democrat?"
IMO he'd be neither. he'd be a radical/independent.
i retract my initial opinion. i agree with this. i think everyone (on both sides) would be like, "WTF?" and then we'd all find out we were ALL wrong about so many things and everyone would feel all defeated and hopefully enlightened.
You have free will to steal and murder, that doesn't mean Jesus will be pro thief or pro murder.
ETA: this is in response to Violet
Everyone knows that Jesus was a long haired, radical, socialist jew.
With thanks to Hugh Blumenfeld (go look it up)
I would hope that Jesus would be above and beyond party affiliations, the same way I hope God doesn't really care about which church/synagogue/mosque/etc you choose for worship.
i said pro choice, not pro abortion.
i don't think anyone is pro robbery, but we're all pro-freedom.
haha, good point
I was just saying in response to your previous comment, I didn't mean I think Jesus is anti free will just because I don't think he would be pro choice.
I def don't want to turn this into a pro choice/pro life debate. I'm heading to the zoo soon and don't have time to discuss it. Adding a WWJD debate on top of a pro choice debate oh my!!!! We would be on here all day lol
I like to think he'd be a crunchy independent.
I think Jesus, unlike us, would know exactly what was in the hearts and souls and intentions of the woman in question, and would not judge the issue so broadly as he would empathize with the pain of the decision, the pain of the situation, or the pain that He felt in her that she believed she had no choice or nowhere to turn.
Maybe
I don't know what Jesus would say about abortion. Like I said this is way to loaded of a topic to get into right now. I'm not even 100% sure on how I feel about abortion. I don't judge it broadly. There are too many grey areas and it's not my decision to make.
FWIW I don't think abortion should be illegal and I'm not out picketing abortion clinics on the weekends.
I think that my point is, unlike us, the idea with God is that he gets the full story. We don't. We judge the murderer, but we don't know everything that went into his head and whether he had evil intent. We judge the thief, but we don't know the full story on both sides.
God, at least, God the way I believe in him, knows that kind of truth, and doesn't have minimum sentencing guidelines. He is able to see beyond the fact that "ABORTION" is a giant political hot potato, and able to look at the truth of the issue on a smaller scale, but perhaps, a larger, more important picture.
this is a very good point. this is what i wonder about sometimes when people rob others to put food on the table for their kids, etc. i think you're exactly right that we as mere mortals only get a very one-dimensional view of things. whereas Jesus/God sees the entire picture.
eta: i feel really enlightened now, seriously.
True that. I def don't think that people that get abortions are evil. I also don't think that all people that steal are stealing with bad intentions. There are probably so many that committed murder that were wonderful people prior to that act of violence.
All I know is that I don't know lol
I always love your posts. And I agree with most.
