3rd Trimester

weight gain

i'm worried again about my weight :( i didnt really start gaining until about 17-18 weeks and then gained pretty steadily up until 2 weeks ago. Haven't really gained much since. I'm right around 20lbs total. My doctor reassured me at my last visit that everything was good, but I still get comments from co-workers and family about how small I am. Is 20lbs at 28 weeks normal??

Re: weight gain

  • Ignore your coworkers.  If your doctor isn't concerned than I wouldn't worry.

  • I have gained 23.5 pounds and am 36 weeks.  I have even lost weight in between appointments.  I have asked my doctor about it and she said as long as the baby keeps growing she isn't too concerned unless I start loosing a considerable amount of weight.  Hope that helps.
  • Sounds perfectly normal to me. Check out www.indiacurry.com and go to their pregnancy weight gain calculator - it will give you your min, max, and avg. weight gain per week.

I've gained 17lbs at just about 29 weeks.

  • That's the beauty of pregnancy... there is no "normal".  It really depends on you, the baby, and your body.

I had only gained 5 pounds at 20 weeks.  Now I'm up 30 pounds and 34 weeks.  Yep, no rhyme or reason to it.

  • I've only gained 15#.  Small belly doesn't always mean something is wrong.  Everyone grows a little differently.
  • That is normal. You are at the beginning of your third tri. You still have 12 weeks or so. Even if your weight gain slows, 25-30 lbs is exactly were you should be so you only need to gain 5 more lbs in 12 weeks.

  • I haven't gained 20 lbs yet -- I was up 16 lbs at my appt. this week.  Dr. said it was find, and I started out in a normal weight range (5'3", 120 lbs pre-pregnancy).
  • As pp mentioned, there is definitely no normal. Each woman will gain what her body and baby need. I get told I am "so small!" all the time. It's actually starting to drive me crazy! I didnt gain anything unti my 24 week appt where I gained 3 lbs. At 27 weeks I was up another 7lbs. for a total of 10lbs. I am pretty sure I have gained a few more  - next appt is next week!

  • I started slightly overweight. I have gained 13 lbs and only in the tummy area. I'm huge there, everywhere else has stayed the same. With my last pregnancy, in 34 weeks, I gained 38 lbs and it was all over, my belly wasn't that big at all. Each pregnancy is different as is it different for each person. I'm sure you are fine.

    great tool:)  thanks for sharing:)

  • honey...don't even talk to me about a measley 20lbs. When you've hit 45lbs, then complain.
  • I have only gained 17 lbs so far this pregnancy. I only gained 1/2 lb in the last four weeks.  I am not concerned at all.
  • That's about where I was at that time.  Everyone was saying how small I was too, but my belly got considerably larger in the last month!  My total weight gain is 31 pounds.  Just around average.  I'm happy about that!  I wouldn't worry if I were you.

  • I've only gained 15 lbs at almost 30 weeks.  My doctor is not concerned, and I was small to begin with.  If your doctor is happy with your weight gain, don't listen to anyone else!
  • If your doctor isn't worried then you shouldn't be.

I'm at +20 pounds now and didn't gain at my last appt.

  • I am only at 15lbs!  I had the same problem where I was loosing weight up until about 20 weeks, so I had a lot of catching up to do.  My midwife is totally fine with where I am at, and we are able to see that baby is growing just fine at the ultrasounds.  Remember that everyone is different, and as long as your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either!  :)
  • I'm +15 at 19 weeks. If your doctor isn't concerned, don't listen to anyone else.

  • I've only gained 10lbs so far (only 5lbs up from my pre-pg weight) but I started out overweight so I wasn't supposed to gain much.  Everyone is different so there's no need to be worried.
  • Its funny how we get different information from EVERYONE.  I had gained a total of 21 pounds at my 28 week appointment and my doctor told me that I had to be careful because I was gaining too much weight.  And I am 5'8" and started my pregnancy at a healthy weight (size 8).
  • there is no 'normal' - if your Doc is ok with it then dont worry.

    im up 22lbs at 26 weeks :-/
