Trouble TTC

Lap and HSG - Tips?

I went to my doctor on Monday and based on my symptoms during AF (and family history) he believes I have endometriosis... I've suspected this for awhile now too! He's actually doing something about it though! When AF starts (due April 19th) I have to call the office and that following week he's going to do my laparoscopy and HSG at the same time. I'm very nervous, mainly about the bowel prep, but I'm so excited! April is 2 years since we've been TTC #1 so I think it's about time!

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for after surgery? Will I need pads, bandages, etc? Any advice will help!

Re: Lap and HSG - Tips?

  • I was wondering the same thing...I will have mine on Friday G/L to you on yours and hopefully your doctor can help you with your next BFP soon.

  • I just had mine yesterday.  You won't need bandages. They close the wound with derma bond. Kind of a a liquid bandaid.  You will need pads since you will have blood, tissue and the dye coming out and you can't wear tampons for a week.  I'm curious about the bowl prep? I didn't do any of that. You'll have a hard time sitting up and laying down on your own so I'd suggest having someone with you for a day or two.  GL I hope you get the answers you need.

  • My doctor wasn't originally planning on doing a bowel prep, but since I have diarrhea and painful BM's during AF he thought it might be best in case there's endo growing on my bowels... I don't know if it'll be an enema at the hospital that morning or the night before at home drinking some concoction that clears it all out. I've heard the bowel prep is 10x worse than the recovery from the lap, that's why I'm not looking forward to it!
  • Yep, the bowel prep sucks more than anything!!!  But, once you're done with it, you know the worst is over.  You'll need pads for after the surgery.  Otherwise, try to have easy food to make or someone to make you food for a few days at least and don't plan on doing any driving.  Just take it easy afterwards.  Have the doctor give you the results or any instructions with someone else in the room; after both laps I don't remember anything my doctor said to me, but the second time I asked the doctor to not tell me anything unless my husband was also in the room and that worked fine.  Also, get the phone number the doctor wants you to call if you have any questions.

My bowel prep wasn't that bad.  The not being able to eat any solid food for 24 hrs before the surgery and nothing at all within 12 hrs of it was what really sucked.

I read these before mine, too.

I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia.  So, I ended up having two IV doses of benedryl and took benedryl every few hours for a few days after.  I also wasn't allowed to eat more than something bland and soft (they recommended chicken broth or chicken noodle soup) for most of the day after my lap.

Also, the pain medication they gave me made me constipated.  I called to speak to the nurse about it (I also spoke to my sister who had this same problem after a laparoscopy to remove her gall bladder) and was told to drink gatorade and take a stool softener and if that didn't work take a stimulant laxative.  I noticed that most of the gas pain didn't actually leave until after I had a BM.  The nurse said that constipation is a common side effect.

I think the previous posters covered pretty much everything else.
