Rice cereal / starting solids

What rice cereal did you feed baby when he/she was ready for it?

Kirsten isn't quite ready for solids, but the time is approaching and I wanted to sort of get a feel for what direction to look in...

Anyone skip rice and move straight to fruits or veggies? At what age did you try?

I have tons of baby cook books and am super excited about making our own baby food, but the rice cereal has be a bit stumped. Some people told me they skipped over the cereal and tried mashed up bananas at 4 months. Granted this is one person, and all babies are different.

    She's a ways off, no?  DD started solids at 6 months with sweet potato and avocado, then rice cereal, then banana.  Her system handles veggies best.

    DD started with avocados at 6 months.  You've got a while ahead of you!  I personally wouldn't start at 4 months.  Think of it this way, the more you can delay the nasty diapers the better!

    Oh she's certainly not ready any time soon for solids... DH and I were in the store and saw rice cereal and started talking about her starting, when it would maybe happen, and whether we wanted to do the cereal or just go right into food.?

    Yeah the longer I don't have to pay for her food, the better! haha!?

    We started at 6.5 months with sweet potatoes.  I never give her rice cereal.  I do sometimes mix oatmeal with her fruit for breakfast.

    Ditto this- we might have given her avocado when she was like 5 months, 3 weeks and 4 days- before she was actually 6 months.  

    I never bothered w/ rice cereal.  I hate pumping and the thought of "wasting" BM to mix w/ the cereal really annoyed me.
