Pedi says that Declan

has reflux.  I'm glad I went in.  She prescribed him something to take once a day (I didn't get the name and she faxed the prescription in so no paperwork to look at).  She also suggested feeding a tad more often during the day to try and get his weight gain a bit better and help the reflux, and to feed him so his body is parallel to mine.  I will probably try elevating one side of his bassinet by propping some books under it or something too.

I didn't expect reflux at all, but I'm glad that we have a starting point.  Hopefully the meds work quickly (she said it could take a week for his esophagus to heal, so he may still be fussy for a while).

The only slightly disappointing thing is that he gained a mere 7 oz in the last 2 weeks.  That's about minimum.  I'm hoping with the meds it will help and he'll gain just a bit more.  He started out gaining so quickly (when I was feeding on both sides he gained a pound in 12 days) that this was odd.  DD was about the same growth rate as he is right now though so it wouldn't be totally unusual.  At least he won't grow out of his clothes as fast as he was before!

Thanks for all the help ladies, and for encouraging me to see the doc.  I truly was convinced it was just fussiness, but on a whim today I called and they thought it was something more.  I feel a lot better now!

  • I'm glad to hear that they were able to start helping, and I hope that it works quickly!

  • I'm glad you know now what's wrong and hopefully he can start feeling better soon.
  • Glad you went in!

Maybe I'm just more aware of it now, but it seems like reflux is getting more and more common.

  • I'm glad to hear you took him in. And I'm glad that he has a diagnosis. If you need a reflux buddy, I can be it. Charlie's reflux is sorta under control now and he's on prilosec. I bet the pedi put Declan on zantac. Just an FYI they are very weight dependent and if he goes up too much in weight you need to go back in and get the dose adjusted. Also their bodies can get accustomed to the zantac (if that is what he's taking) and it becomes ineffective after a while. For DS it was 2 months. Anyway, this is what DS sleeps in. It is a godsend. You may want to consider it. I ordered it and got it in two days I think. Anyway, I hope D starts feeling better soon.
  • I'm so glad you went in!  I had a feeling. Sad

One thing that really helped Ryan was Maalox.  We dipped a pacifier in just a little bit and let him lick it off.  This helped SO much that we were able to avoid the Zantac.

Thanks!  I have a hard time spending money on gear since we are probably done with kids, but we'll see how other ideas go and take it from there.

I agree. I hated spending that extra money on one more baby thing, but seriously if he is still having trouble sleeping...consider it. I'm so glad I got it for Charlie. And he's likely our last as well.

  • Once the meds start kicking in, you'll have a brand new baby.  Yay for progress!
  • I'm so glad you know what is going on now.  T&P for a speedy recovery for Declan and smoother days ahead for all of you!

This. When Bruce started his even our friends were commenting on how drastic a change it was. It really is amazing. But then if you think about it and you had heartburn all.day.every.day you'd be pretty freaking cranky, too! I would guess the same as proudarmy and that they started him on Zantac - it is the usual starting point. The dose is really weight dependent. Bruce was on the highest allowable dose per weight and we had to adjust every time he gained 1 kilo (which is around 2 lbs). He didn't have to switch to a new med until he was 18 months and took Zantac happily from 3-15 months.

For other things, definitely if you're not going to get the sleeper proudarmy mentioned (which I would have KILLED for when Bruce was an infant btw) definitely think about at least a cot wedge or cot blocks to elevate one end of his sleeping surface. It makes such a huge difference. That plus a sleep positioner so we could put Bruce on his side was our best combination.

Good luck and I hope you see some improvement soon. With us it was pretty quick, definitely under a week!

  • I'm glad you went to the doc and I hope the meds work.  It sounds like his reflux was pretty bad if he had such little weight gain.  I hope it gets better.

I think they are more aware of it now and before they just called it colic.

  • Glad you were able to get in, and I hope the med start helping him asap!
  • Our twins have reflux. My MIL gave me this Fisher Price Infant to Toddler Rocker. Actually I think it connects to a swing too but we use it as the rocker only. We've been using it since they were like 2 months old. It's wonderful for the reflux. Helps them to sit up more after eating than the infant bouncer seat. The boys like looking around...

The medicine is most like generic Zantac in liquid form. Pretty safe in my opinion since I took it myself through 2 pregnancies.
