and freaking out a bit. I didn't get to go to the infant care class b/c of bedrest and I have no idea how to diaper my baby, burp, feed, etc. I am fairly certain they will show you a lot in the hospital. I just feel so overwhelmed!
And like little things confuse me...if I am breast feeding, will they show me how to bottle feed in the hospital? How do you go out to say the mall with a bottle? You can't heat it up while you are out, so what do you do? If you breast feed, you can breast feed out but what if you bottle feed?
sorry, I just feel overwhelmed and feel like I need an instruction manual ![]()
Re: I am on bedrest and delivering soon...
They will tell you what you need to know while you are there. Our hospital also allows us to call them at any time with Qs!
I would make a list now, before you deliver, and learn as it comes up! You will do great, and can ask here whenever you need help!
A lot if this will come to you as you go, and your method will be fine!
Good luck, and here is to an easy delivery!!
When we left with DS, we kept thinking there would be flashing lights in the rear-view because we were totally not qualified for this!
You will learn so much while you are in the hospital. When I delivered the nursery nurses were the best at showing me how to do different things with the baby.
At the hospital, if you formula feed, they will have the ready to feed formula to give you, which means the formula is already mixed and you feed them. You can also buy these types of bottles in the store and most likely they will send you home with some. You do not have to heat up a bottle. I always fed dd room temperature formula or she will even drink it straight from the fridge. I bought some containers for the formula. Then I would just fill a bottle with water and then add in the formula when she was ready to eat.
I know it is overwhelming but you will be a pro in no time! I was on bedrest for a while too and I know just laying there you have nothing more to do but just obsess over things. It's rough!
Just ask tons of questions while you are there and from anyone with kids you know....and breathe!
I"m sorry you're feeling like this. TOTALLY normal, whether you've taken 100 classes or none.
I'll tell you a secret - babies are not that hard and you will have a better idea than you think on how to care for them. Really.
They eat, sleep and poop in the beginning. mostly sleep. so you get to learn things at a slower pace. You won't have to do all 3 things the 1st 5 minutes. Use the nurses in the hospital, and heck, google "giving an infant a bath" on youtube if you want.
Bottom line, is my SIL NEVER EVER EVER babysat, or really, even held a baby prior to having hers. She's CLUELESS about kids.
Her baby is healthy, happy, and they're doing great. She asks a lot of questions from those that can help (lac consultants, moms, HERE...)
and she just does what seems natural sometimes.
You can do this.
The HARD PART is when they turn two. lol.
GL!
I delivered early and I knew early that I would deliver early so I was in denial - just wanted to tell you kudos for trying to be prepared!
That said, I promise you will learn everything you need to learn. Make a list of questions for the nurses for things that you want help with. Otherwise, we're here for questions you have, too!!!
I wish you all the best!!!
hugs, you will be fine...they had a class after I delivered and DH went to it at the hospital. they gave him a baby bath (small pink one) and a free book on taking care of infants.
you will do it....your mommy instinct will kick in. good luck!!
I had never really had experience with infants, and it was all so new to me too. I went to childbirth classes but to be honest it didn't help at all!
It came totally natural and was easier than I thought. I do refer to "what to expect the first year" and ask questions as they come up, here, my mom, my Dr, depending on what it is.
You are going to do great!
Don't worry, it will be okay. They do teach you everything in the hospital. Neither DH nor I had any experience with babies so we were pretty nervous but we learned what we needed to at the hospital and with practice you will perfect it for your LO.
As for bottle feeding. I don't think that anyone showed me, but you and your little one will figure it out. I did nurse in the hospital (and supplemented via oral syringe w/ formula) and then started with bottle feedings of bm around 4 weeks and then with formula around 3 months and then went to formula only at 6 months when my supply dried up. Bottles of formula can be very easy too. There are a few options you can do when you go out depending on where you plan to be. You can completely prepare the bottle and then store it in your diaper bag (many bags have a little insulated pouch) for when you are ready to feed your LO. We were lucky that DS would take warm or cold bottles so we did not have to worry about heating them all of the time. Another option is to just pre-measure the formula powder in the bottle and then get water while you are out, you can get warm water this way too.
Good luck!
I went to one of those classes and it was a complete waste of time. Practising on a doll is NOTHING like the real thing. So you didn't miss anything. Watch some videos on youtube if you want. But the nurses will help you with the basics and then you ask a zillion questions here. (I have no idea where non-nesties get their information!)
You'll do great. Good luck!
