Babies: 0 - 3 Months

flailing limbs while falling asleep

does your baby flail wildly while trying to fall asleep?  She has been trying to bust out of the miracle blanket, so I've tried keeping her arm or arms out, but she takes over an hour to fall asleep b/c of the flailing.  Lately she's even flailing around like a mermaid while in the miracle blanket.

Why do babies do this? WHen do they outgrow it?  I have been catching her before overtired, so I don't think that's it....

  • Just posted something similar. My dd arms and legs never stop moving. swaddle is no help at all.

my poor dd eye's are puffy from lack of sleep.
  • have you tried the miracle blanket?  we used this to swaddle ds until he was nearly 5 months.  he finally outgrew the flailing arm thing...
  • We stopped swaddling and DS flails as well.  If he's turning is head back and forth like he's trying to fall asleep, I'll take my hand and hold it over the top of his near hand so one arm isn't flailing.  It's worked pretty well.  (although some night, it'll start him fussing again)
  • I have read that they do this when they are over tired, they are trying to fight falling asleep.  Try to start soothing to sleep prior to this behavior.  It is easier said than done, I am fighting this too.  I am reading Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child.
