nursing lying down - how to do it?

Dumb question, but can someone walk me through the logistics of how you nurse lying down? I could never do it with my DS but thought I'd give it another try with DD as I'm hating this eat every 1.5 hour 6 week growth spurt! I could never figure out how to get DS latched on and to stay on, plus didn't really know where to put my hands/arms. Help a tired mom out, please!

Re: nursing lying down - how to do it?

  • When I nurse lying down I have to have a pillow b/w my legs and a body pillow supporting my back.  I make sure she is parallel to my body, lying directly on her side and her mouth is right in front of my boob.  Good Luck!

  • I've tried a couple times, semi sucessfully.  He got some milk, but overall we were both uncomfortable.  I just did it when I couldn't stand being vertical for another second.  My thoughts on it were that maybe after he's bigger it will work better.

I kept my arm under my head and the top arm was trying to help us adjust and stay together.

  • I lay on my side on one arm and the other is above my head. Awkward a bit. I put a pillow behind my back so that I dont roll over and feel supported. I bring Henry to my breast, on his side, and he nurses. Sometimes I roll up a burp cloth and put it behind him so he is supported. Usually he wants to stay on forever, but lately he has unlatched and rolled onto his back and slept. I dont sleep great this way, but its nice to lay down and rest.

Just try it, see how it feels for you. And then try it again. I know for me one side works better than the other.

  • We nurse laying down every single night and have done so since the very first night.

I just lay on my side and put Ethan on his side with his mouth facing my boob. Now that he is older, he actually reaches out and grabs the boob with both hands and puts it in his mouth. Somtimes, I have to like, c-up my breast and hold it into his mouth or it sort of falls out.

I put the arm that is on the side I'm laying on up over my head on a pillow, and the other arm kind of cups Ethan.

Once you get the hang of it, its SO much easier than getting up, nursing in a chair or something, and going back to bed. I usually fall asleep as soon as I get Ethan latched on, and he falls asleep, too. Also, now that he is getting a bit older, he'll put himself on in the night and nurse a bit and roll off.

  • I could never figure it out when he was younger.  Now I put him in the crook of my arm, both on our sides perfectly parralel to each other with his head of course low enough so that it is right in front of my breast.  It works out well.  Latching isn't an issue.  I usually fall asleep and so does he.

  • I didn't start this until about 6-8 weeks but i love it. Works great for those lazy days too.

I lay on my side, and put one arm under my head and the other I use to hold so we are belly to belly.  We usually both can sleep like this.  Then he unlatched and falls to his to sleep.
  • I lay on witchever side and put my arm under my head and DS and I are belly to belly, he lays on his side. and my other hand olds an airway clear for him.  he usually stays in one spot and latches/delatches himself.
