Bottle conundrum - sort of long

Mallory woke again at 3 last night and wanted to nurse.  She'd pigged out at bedtime...nursed for 16 minutes when usually she goes for 10 max.  I think she's growth spurting.  I'm thinking I should give her more during the day to help with this issue.  However, she's not drinking all the bottles I send to daycare as is.  I send 4 with the expectation that she'll drink 3 and the 4th is a spare.  The majority of the time that's exactly what happens -- she drinks 3.  Very rarely she drinks all 4.  At least once a week she naps a ton and only takes 2 bottles.  You would think those are the days she would wake at night to eat but not necessarily.

So I'm thinking that I should increase the amount in each bottle.  She'll probably still drink just 3 but they could have 5 oz instead of 4.  Do you think that might help?  I don't know if she would take that much but I can try it.  She also has a fruit and oatmeal at daycare each day.

I can't believe I'm going to be sending more milk...I thought once we started doing more and more solids she'd end up taking less (not more) BM.  The other thing that sucks is I can't pump enough each day for her current 4 oz bottles...let alone another ounce per bottle.

  • I don't have any experience with this, but if she isn't finishing all the bottles you send now I wouldn't up the ounces per bottle. Could you give her a solid shortly before bed so she feels fuller longer? I do know that my LC said they always wake to eat in the middle of the night when they hit a growth spurt, I don't remember why but it made sense when she explained it. Maybe wait a week and see if it continues to happen?

That probably wasn't much help, but good luck!

She does finish the bottles that she starts.  She drinks all 4 oz.  I'm saying that I send 4 bottles and she's only drinking 3.  Perhaps she would take more then 4 oz at a time though.

  • I'd try upping the amount in the bottle by 1/2 oz or 1 oz and see what happens. She may be extra hungry just this week and go back to her normal appetite. Have your dcp keep you informed on whether she finishes the bottles or how much is left each time so you can reassess in another few days. Also, have you considered upping the solids?

She's taking alot more solids suddenly.  When the oatmeal or fruit/veggie is gone she gets mad.  I'll call it a growth spurt and keep an eye on it I guess.  Thanks!

My doc told me that once they finish a complete bottle to offer 1/2 oz more next time.  They should generally leave a tiny bit in the bottle, but if they drain it they will usually take more.  Try giving her 4.5 oz tomorrow and see if she finishes it, if so, then make it 5oz.

I am having the same issues with supply and worrying about pumping enough to make her bottles.  It is so frustrating, but maybe you'll surprise yourself and start making more? No clue though.
