Did any of you MoMs decide to not have the NT scan?

It's that time four us to decide.  I dont think our ins. will cover it and with 3 babies it would be almost $1500 dollars. If you did or didn't have it, can you tell me why you made your decision?

Re: Did any of you MoMs decide to not have the NT scan?

  • Frankly, it was never even given to us as an option. I think because my OB did an u/s at 7 weeks instead. I don't know. Had I been given the option AND my insurance covered it, I would have done it. But if it would have cost $1500, I would not have.

  • It was one of those things that we didn't do because I knew I wouldn't have an abortion either way and I figured that if it came back abnormal I would not want to have a CVS or amnio because of the increased risk of miscarriage. I figured that if it came back abnormal I would just worry for the rest of my pregnancy. Same with the triple screen.

  • what are your risk factors? Are you in your 30s? my OB only does it for women 30+.  I did it with both pgs - but it was covered by insurance.

  • We didn't do it. Didn't really give it too much thought -- I tend to shy away from testing if it's not absolutely necessary, and we didn't have high risk factors (as pp said)

  • Mine was covered by my insurance because I was 35 when I delivered.

I would have never aborted. I did it anyway because it was a free opportunity to see my babies. It was so much fun to watch them for so long. If it wasn't covered by insurance then I probably wouldn't have had one.

Also, my OB responded to the argument that someone might not have an NT scan because they would not abort regardless of what they found. She said that if you find a problem on the NT scan it allows the delivery team to have the right specialists in the delivery room, which substantially improves the outcomes for babies, especially if they find heart or kidney defects.

  • I don't think we did it.  I had bloodwork done around 16 or 18 weeks, and my risk factors came back really low, so we didn't move forward with any other tests.  My OB said because of my age and our family histories my risk factors were pretty low anyways.
  • We did the NT Scan, but I wouldn't do it for $1500.

Ditto.  We were never even offered it.

  • We did not do it.  It would have been covered by my insurance and I was 35 when I delivered but I did not want to do it b/c I did not want to know the results.  I was afraid to see something that would push us to get an amnio and I was terrified of that.  My dr. did not push for us to do it.

I didn't do it either. My insurance wouldn't have covered it, and I frankly just didn't feel like getting it. I've had so many tests in the past year and none of them have come back normal. I figured if I had it something would have shown up as abnormal and I would have worried the entire rest of my pregnancy. My doctor said she didn't need to know for delivery. There are other tests later on I might do if I reconsider.

With my preg I got tons of US anyway. They looked at their hearts, kidneys etc a million times.

  • I did it because I wanted to be prepared if something WAS going on with them.  However, I did not have a previous u/s and the first u/s we had was for the NT scan (at 13 weeks) and we found out we were having twins.  So I am glad that I did it, but really only for this reason.  My risk factors are VERY low and the doctor hasn't mentioned additional tests.

If something had come back indicating that something else was wrong, I wouldn't have terminated the pregnancy.  One of my friends did not have the NT scan and they told her late in her pregnancy that it appeared that her son had downs, but it turned out after amnio that he was just fine. I think this scared me, which is probably why I didn't hesitate to do it.

  • We passed. I wasn't high risk and it wouldn't have changed anything for us.

I had an U/S between 6/7 weeks (when we confirmed pregnancy) and would not have had a second one until the anatomy scan at 19 weeks, unless I had the NT scan, so I was all for it. If I had to pay though, I would have waited.

My OB got super excited about scaring me about being ::GASP - 34:: and pregnant and I did pretty much whatever she told me to. But, my recollection is that the abnormalities that they test for at the NT scan can only be seen on the scan at 12-14 weeks, which is why the test is offered at that time. It makes sense that you would see those defects at later scans, so I am not sure why she was so fixated on having me tested then? I do know that after 14 weeks the chromosomal tests would have to be confirmed through an invasive procedure like and amnio or a CVS, which I would never have done.

  • It was never given to us as an option. Like peakay said, if insurance would have covered it (which I'm sure it would have) we would have had it done, but since we were never offered then we never got it. We also opted out of the quad screen - which you should be offered around 16 weeks. My OB said it gives a lot of false positives, and we didn't want to deal with the anxiety a false positive would bring. Not to mention, OB said any major abnormality would be detected at 19wk anatomy scan anyways..

    GL with your decision!

  • We didn't.  I was having the babies regardless of the results, and so we didn't bother.
