3rd Trimester

cousin's car accident and car seat rec.

My cousin was involved in a 5 car pile up the other day. Her 1 year old was in the backseat in an Eddie Bauer carseat. The car is completely totaled but the baby came out of it completely unscathed. I don't know what Baby Bargains says about this car seat, but I am now considering buying an Eddie Bauer instead of the Britax I had registered for.

Re: cousin's car accident and car seat rec.

  • wow!!  That's so great that baby was okay.  We have one Eddie Bauer and one Britax.  They are both supposed to be really safe.  Is your cousin okay?

  • yes, she's fine just really shaken up and sore from the air bag going off. A dump truck was going too fast in a construction zone and plowed right into her and 4 other cars. They were extremely lucky.

    Thank you for asking!
  • Holy SH!t!! glad they are both okay!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank God they are okay!

Pretty much any carseat sold today, if installed correctly and if baby is buckled correctly,is going to give your baby GREAT protection in the case of an accident.

That said, the Eddie Bauer seats are actually Cosco seats with Eddie Bauer fabrics, and they are typically not near the top of the list of "safest" seats (although I am not sure of their exact rating in this year's Baby Bargains).

Your baby will be as safe (or even safer!) in a Britax (in case you were questioning that...).  They have the highest safety/ease of use ratings ut there.  But like I said, if you use another seat (like an Eddie Bauer) and are sure it is installed correctly and baby is buckled securely, your baby will have great protection in the case of an accident.

  • OMG, I am glad they are both okay!  that is scary

    Very glad they're both OK!

But really, I wouldn't make a carseat decision based on the outcome of one accident.  ALL carseats meet certain minimum safety guidelines, and there are certainly some horrible accidents in which no carseat will be effective.

I don't know that this would make me rethink an already well-researched decision.

  • EB rates very poorly, stick with Britax which rates tops far and above every single time. One crash is not a judge of a good seat, repeat tests at variable speed is.
