strange breast milk comments

DH's family all have comments about me breastfeeding. For the first few weeks when they heard I was breastfeeding several of them asked "how's your milk?" I thought it was the strangest question and felt like saying "well why dont you lean down and have a suck and let me know?". DS has reflux so spits up A LOT. The other day DS's cousin who has two grown kids was holding DS and he spit up down her shirt. She wipes it up and says "well it smells sour, your milk must be bad." I was furious and tried to politely explain that no my milk is not bad (that is a virtual impossibility!) but that it has been in DS's stomach for over an hour and he has reflux so he produces a lot of acid. I wanted to ask "well, what does it taste like when you have heartburn? ACIDIC!! Hello!"

Re: strange breast milk comments

  • That would irritate me too.  I have gotten strange comments as well.  My own father asked me: "so, you don't give the baby any milk at all?  Do you need me to buy you some similac?"

... um it's called "breastmilk" for a reason, Dad.

  • How dis-empowering.  I am sorry you get those type of comments.  Your doing the best thing you could do for your little one.  Screw them.

  • I don't remember now who said it to me...but I was talking to someone about the price of formula and how I was glad I didn't have to buy it. They said I would have to eventually, it wasn't like I was going to bf until she was a year old...

    And why not??
