Would you loan out your dipes?

I've decided to keep a good portion of my NB stash for my own future use or close friends to borrow.  But now the question is do I loan them to someone that I'm not fully comfortable with? I'm relatively sure she would return them, it's the condition I'm a little worried about. I don't want to seem anal, but I worry that she will use the wrong detergents and/or dry them on super high and kill the elastic and PUL.

What would you do?

Also, I've offered them to someone who is having her baby in early August. The person who would borrow them now (her baby is 2 weeks old) should be able to return them before then, right?

Re: Would you loan out your dipes?

  • Can I do a special snowflake?  I have loaned mine out but only to people that I was comfortable in doing so.  I believe that they will take excellent care of them.  I also only loaned out the ones that I would not be upset with the being returned a lot more worn out.

  • I need a special snowflake... I have loaned my diapers in the past to 2 different people, one of them who I wouldn't loan them to again... I don't mind loaning some here and there, but I think you have to be clear with them how you expect to receive them back.  The one person I wouldn't loan them back to had obviously not been using the dryer tabs and didn't use the cloth liners I loaned along with them.  They came back a pilly mess and stained more than I ever thought could happen... she also decided to use a diaper rash cream that I specifically asked her not to, so my diapers also came back with a fishy smell.

  • I actually bought most of it out as a "new baby gift" to a mom who had #2 and was interested in CDing.  I gave her a pail, a bottle of purex Free & clear and gave her a lesson.

I did hold back 6 of our 12 KLOs so my baby will have some "new" diapers- but most of what I bought was 2nd hand, or PFs that I prepped anyway.

  • It really depends on the type of diaper. I'd loan prefolds, no issue, and most of my covers and pockets. I wouldn't do AIOs, as they are the biggest pain to care for and seem to have the most issues. I'd give her a deadline for returning (say something like friend #2 needs them by Aug 1, so please return by July 15... I think her baby should be done w/ nb stuff by then, but I guess it depends on what type of CD you're talking about and how big her baby is).

  • I have given away some from my newborn or outgrown diapers, but I'm not loaning them out. I gave away ones I bought FSOT and plan to replace with new. I hope to have a few more kiddos in these diapers so I won't loan them out for one more person to add wear to them. I'm willing to let someone *try* a diaper to see how they like it, but I would expect to have it back after 1-2 wears (if that...maybe just to try it on).

  • Pixy has my infant prefolds right now!

That said, if I didn't trust her to take care of them, I wouldn't have let her borrow them.
