3rd Trimester

Baby sleeping on back, side or front...

So at prenatal class they said- never put baby on stomach.  Then the other day I was talking to my mom and she went on and on about how she had all of her kids sleep on their side.  Never on their stomach.  She said she used something to keep the baby on their side and unable to roll on to their stomach. This makes sense to me- since in first aid you always put people on their sides (the recovery position).  I googled this and couldn't find anything wrong with side sleeping.

Any opinions on that?

  • At my class today they said absolutely no side or belly sleeping.

Brylee will sleep on her back 100%

  • The recommendations have changed over the years as new studies have come out. Currently the American Academy of Pediatrics (and may other organizations) recommend back is best.

  • My cousin has a 8 week old and she has some kind of wedge thing that he sleeps in that keeps him mostly on his back but tilted a little to the side. It makes sense to me incase they spit up that way it wont be choking them. But I have not done much research about this so I cant really give you and great info sorry.

  • Generally speaking, it should be the back. However, my oldest was an excessively fussy/difficult baby.  I did indeed eventually try side sleeping, the sleep positioner, the wedge, etc. because I was just so desperate to get her to sleep for any length of time.  So you just never know what kind of baby you'll get or what you might try when you've had oh, no more than like 1-2 hr of sleep at a time around the clock for weeks :)
  • They used to put babies on their stomachs, then my sister and brother were on their side, but they have found that by putting them on their backs the sids rate has reduced dramatically.  DO NOT put on side or belly.  Also, unless suggested by the dr. do not get a sleep positioner (they also increase sids risks)

  • Everything I've read says back, and that's what we're planning on. The wedges/sleep positioners/etc are not recommended. They brought that point up in my infant safety class, too.
  • Yea my mom had us all on our stomach. Things change over 26 years. Now drs say on the back only. Just go with what your dr says.
