fever off & on for 4 days - when would you take him to the doctor?

DS has had a fever off & on since Friday. It was at its highest on the 1st day at 102.5. Right now it's 101.3. He doesn't have a fever during the day. Calling the doc is a waste of time to decided if I should bring him in. They've told me - "bring him in if you want or call us if he gets worse". WWYD? FWIW, it will cost me $80 to see the doc. I hate to even consider the price when it comes to my child's health, but I don't want to waste money or my time if it's not worth it.

  • Does he have any other symptoms? Is he drinking fluids? Is he peeing?

No other symptoms. He's eating & drinking his normal amounts. Only difference is he's a bit clingy. If it matters, he's 4 years old.
  • I'd probably wait it out a week as long as he's still drinking and peeing. It's probably just a virus anyway and nothing the ped can do about it. After a week, I'd probably take him just in case, though. GL!

No other symptoms other than being cllngy. He's eating, drinking & peeing his normal amounts. If it matters he's 4 years old.
  • If he's still running a fever tomorrow I'd take him in.  Strep throat seems to be going around (at least in my area) and sometimes kids don't have a lot of symptoms with that.

  • DD did that a couple of weeks ago, only at night and by the 4th day she woke up screaming that her ear hurt.  It ends up she had a severe ear infection.  She didn't show any other signs either.  Good luck, hope he gets better soon!

  • My son has had several viruses where the only symptoms were fever and lethargy... he ate almost normally, slept well, etc.  The fever almost always breaks on the 5th day which is also the limit my doctor gave me (unless he develops other symptoms, then they recommend a visit asap).

So, I would give it another day but definitely bring him in on Thursday or Friday if he still has a fever that way you don't have to go the whole weekend without a diagnosis if he's still sick.
