For the knitters...

Is there a good yarn to use as a wool alternative? I am allergic to most wool, but still want to be able to follow patterns that I have found that require wool.

Any advice?

Re: For the knitters...

  • what are you looking to make? Patterns are usually written for a specific weight of yarn, not the fiber it's made of.

  • I have several patterns that require different weights of wool yarn. I would prefer to use cotton, but it doesn't have the same versatility as wool.
  • How about Alpaca?

my question wasn't really answered. What are you looking to make? (sweaters? longies? hats?) because what you want to make will affect which fibers would be the most recommended.

  • I apologize. I have a pattern for a wool afghan i want to make, as well as an infant's kimono-style sweater.

afghans you can really use anything. 100% cotton is going to stretch more, but a lot of crocheters use acrylic with good results as well.

I also wouldn't use 100% cotton for a sweater because of the stretch. But, for an infant, it might be ok.

You can always look up the pattern on ravelry.com and if you look at the pattern page, you can look at the yarn ideas to see what other people used.

    Ditto all this.

    you're welcome.

One yarn that would make a nice sweater, I think, is Lion Brand Microspun. It is so, so soft...but be careful with it because it splits like nothing else I've worked with.
