3rd Trimester

:( Found out today I'm GBS+...getting induced at 39 weeks.

I'm bummed out.  I had my 36 week appt today and my dr told me I'm GBS+.  For some reason I had a feeling the past couple weeks that the results would come back positive...motherly intuition I guess.  She wants to induce me at 39 weeks in order to make sure I get adequately treated during labor.  I wanted to go into labor naturally so I feel very sad today after hearing the news. Has anyone gone through or currently going through what I am???  Please help provide me with some comfort!   TIA!!

Re: :( Found out today I'm GBS+...getting induced at 39 weeks.

  • Is the GBS+ the only reason she is inducing?  If you feel strongly about going into labor naturally, I would ask if you can postpone that until at least your due date--if not, a few days later.

I'm GBS+ this time and the dr. seemed to act like it was no big deal--they'll just give me as many of the antibiotics as possible in the hospital (ideally, over 4 hours).

I was induced with my first at 40wks, 5 days--but that was because the dr. wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks.  I've not heard of anyone being induced for GBS.

    Good luck!

  • i would decline the induction if GBS + is the only reason... not good enough! you deserve the labor you want, you have to advocate for yourself!

  • Hrmmmm...I would definitely question being induced.  If you get on antibiotics early in labor it doesn't matter when you go.  Everything I've read says that you are at a higher risk if you go a long time after your water breaks before gettig your antibiotics.  I'd read up on it and get a second opinion.  Inducing labor, to me, is something I will try to avoid at ALL costs.
  • I've never heard of inducing solely due to GBS+ results. I agree with asking to at least postpone until your due date.
  • I would definately talk to your OB about why she is inducing you. I was GBS+ with my son as well as with this pregnancy and they won't even consider inducing me until I am 41wks. I have no issues with it with my son. They just hooked me up to some antibiotics and that was all that was ever even said about it. From what I understand it's extremely treatable so I don't think that warrants an induction. I hope that you get your way and that you are able to naturally go into labor!

My doc said the same thing.  She did not act like it was a big deal, and just may have me come in when the contractions are a bit further apart (8-10 minutes instead of 5)
Maybe you should talk to her again if you really don't want to be induced.

  • Rather than my thoughts consuming on going "naturally," I want to do what's best for my baby.  My dr. is big on treating GBS in order to prevent sepsis and other serious complications.  So far I'm a fingertip and 25% effaced, which is small progress but my mother had 3 dangerously fast labors in which she almost lost my brother.  Definitely not saying I'm going to go into labor quick like my mother, but her and I have had incredibly identical pregnancies so far (so I guess I have to somewhat consider the risk).  I could always choose to wait until my due date, so I guess I'll see what my progress is at 38 weeks and then maybe make the decision???

  • By the way, thanks for all your advice so far!  I'm definitely going to consider the option of declining the induction offer!
  • I've never heard of anyone being induced solely due to being GBS+.  If you really don't want to be induced early, I urge you to talk to your doc about this!  Good luck.

    Ditto.

  • I have GBS and they told me all I have to do is be put on antibiotics in the IV when I go in. They also said if my water breaks go in asap and get antibiotics.

I'd decline. The more medical interventions they do, the higher chance of a c-section you have. GL

I guess it depends on how high the risks are of your LO contracting GBS and having serious problems with it vs. the risk of early induction which could lead to a c/s, which also has risks to you and the baby. It's a tough decision- I think making your decision at 38w is a good idea. Though, unless your doc is truly concerned about you having a super fast labor, I can't imagine why she'd want to induce a 1st time mom early just because of GBS. Good luck!

  • I'd definitely be giving my doctor the side eye if she told me she wanted to induce me for GBS. It really blows my mind at how many physicians are so intervention happy!

  • I'm GBS+ and will not be induced until after 41 weeks. Worst case scenario, if your labor is so fast there's not time for antibiotics, they can be given directly to the baby. I would definitely refuse the induction, it seems unnecessary.
  • I'm GBS+ too. I am trying to do it as natural/drug-free as possible. Of course though I will have the antibiotics. My doctor told me that if my water breaks to come in right away to start the antibiotics. If my water doesn't break, but I start laboring, she told me to come in when contractions are 4-5 minutes apart for two hours. She didn't seem overly worried about it. I don't think that being GBS+ with no other complications warrants an induction.

  • I agree with PP about the induction if it is not something that you want.  I was GBS + with my first and went into labor naturally, had a completely  natural labor and was treated for the GBS.  Most doctors want a course of antibiotics four hours prior to birth and a first birth is most likely not going to be shorter than 4 hours.  You should talk to your doc.

  • I've been GBS+ for two of my pregnancies and wasn't induced for that. I went into labor on my own and got to the hospital with lots of time and started/was able to get my antibiotics. No biggy. I wouldn't let them induce me for that. Were there other reasons they are inducing? or just docs convenience?
  • Well, I've ALSO had UTI's throughout this whole pregnancy and have been put on antibiotics until the end of the pregnancy, so maybe that has something to do with it??  I wish I would have thought of all these questions to ask during the appt...grrrr!!
