10 weeks and still eating every 3 hours

Am I doing something wrong or what.  They are 10 weeks old and still eating every 3 hours.  They eat 3 to 4 ounces.  Should I start making them wait longer?  They cry and get fussy so that would mean dealing with the crying for a few days but what did you guys do?  Or did you just let happen whenever it happens.  Oh, and they weigh 11 pounds.  And they were 6 weeks preemie.  Just in case those stats matter.

Re: 10 weeks and still eating every 3 hours

  • Mine are 8 weeks and are eating every 2-3 hours during the day (4-5 ounces at a time).  I am just going to continue to feed them when they are hungry.  I cannot stretch it out.  They cry and cry and cry.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Mine ate every 3 hours till they were 7 months. They'd go longer at night though more like every 5 or 6.

Mine do it 'round the clock.  I have to get up every 3 hours at night too.  Meaning I'm only getting 30 min to 2 hour stretches of sleep... if I'm lucky.  My body is adjusting somewhat to this kind of sleep but some days I don't even feel human.  Do yours do it at night too?

Mine will go between 6 and 7 hours at night.  It's during the day they're eating like maniacs.

OMG!  What am I doing wrong.  How did you get them to sleep at night like that?

  • You aren't doing anything wrong!  Mine just started doing it a few weeks ago on their own; it was nothing I can take credit for.  Can you try to offer them more during their last couple bottles in the evening before bed?  I usually give mine 5 ounces (instead of 4) in their 5 and 7 pm bottles.

  • Mine are 6 months old and eat every 2-3 hours during the day.  They sleep 12 hours at night (7-7) so they wouldn't really be able to consume as much as they need each day if they didn't eat so frequently.  I honestly don't have a problem with them eating every 3 hours.  I pretty much need something to eat every three hours myself during the day, so I can't expect them to do better than that!

I'm perfectly fine with them eating every 3 hours during the day... as a matter of fact I would be fine with them eating every hour on the hour during the day.  But I seriously feel I will lose my mind if I don't sleep soon.  Counting 2 weeks of hospital bed rest before they were born it has been 12 weeks since I slept longer than 2 hours at a time!

  • Our girls are almost 3 months old and they eat every 3 hours during the day, but they've been sleeping 9-10 hours straight at night.  So, they usually only eat 6 times a day.

I bet they'll start sleeping longer at night within the next few weeks.  Our girls started sleeping 7 hours straight just all of a sudden one night... it was SO refreshing to get decent sleep : )  (They've gradually been sleeping longer since then.)

Oh trust me--I feel your pain.  We went through the same thing (including the hospitalized bedrest!).  Do they ever clusterfeed later in the day?  That was one thing that helped our girls start sleeping longer stretches.  Sometimes they wanted food every 1-1.5 hours later in the day, rather than every 2-3.  You might want to try offering them more frequent meals as bedtime approaches--it could be worth a shot!

  • my boys are 9mo and are JUST starting to go to 4 hours - Griffin always ate every 3 hours until he was on all solids. i would not change a thing.
  • you're not doing anything wrong!  who said they had to eat less often right now?  i think at 4or 5mos our ped wanted us to move from 8 to 6 feedings.  ours are 33 1/2wkers, so same as you.  yes, i do think that matters, esp early on.  our ped had us give them water between a morning feeding and later in the afternoon feeding. they hated it, but it did work.  the transition took a few weeks.

fwiw, my dd wanted to eat every 2-3hrs at that time.

i remember one of my sleep books talks about extending feeding times very early.  it was not in the cards for me.  audrey had reflux and i think she needed to eat less quantity, but more often.

  • My girls are 11 weeks and weigh less than 9lbs each. They're still eating every 2 hours during the day. During the night its usually 3-4 hours, but occasionally its every 2 hours. My poor breasts cannot get a break. There's no way I'm going to try to stretch time between feedings. They're so small and they cry relentlessly when they're hungry. I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Hang in there!
  • Your not doing anything wrong. You said they were preemies....if you go to adjusted weight they are 4ish weeks old.....doctors tell you that you should wake them in the night, even if they try to sleep through, until 8 weeks. Give it time. They will start going longer at night soon.

  • We are in the same boat.  Our girls were born on 12/17/09 at 35wks.  They are both right at 9lbs and eat every three hours...it's exhausting but I keep telling myself it can't last forever!
