Moms who CD'd from the beginning

How much did your baby weigh and what size CD's did you start out with? Anyone with bigger babies not need the newborn size?

I know that birth weights can vary a lot (even between children with the same parents) but both DH's and my family have pretty big babies--the "peanuts" are in the 9 lb range (no GD, either. Just big babies.) So I'm wondering if we end up with a 9+ lb newborn, could we skip the newborn dipes and just do some small prefolds/covers?

  • DS was 8 lbs 7 oz and we still used newborn size for at least a few weeks.  If we skipped the newborn size prefolds he would have had quite a bulky diaper just because of the length.

  • Everyone in my family has big babies, but DS came out at 6lbs3oz, 41 weeks. He was actually in preemie clothes! The orange-edge prefolds from GMD+thirsties covers were great until he was about 11 lbs. (for him, about 4 months). I think the infant rather than newborn would have worked fine though.
  • Dd was 7p 6oz and we used size small fitteds (not nb) because our son was 10p 5o and we were sure we wouldn't need nb sizes. We were wrong! The smalls fit but were pretty big and gaped at the legs so we wound up putting out a quick order for the orange edged gmd pf's. Those fit until probably 11ish pounds like the pp said. The size small fitteds fit perfectly after a month and are still on her now (but small fitteds vary from brand to brand).

  • DS was 8 lbs 13 oz, and we were in our KL0's for 3 months - just his body type, he was able to use them a good long time.  We played with pfs here and there, but didn't seriously use them until after the 3 month time frame, so I can't say specifically for nb pfs.

That said, you can always fold down pfs - not ideal, especially when they're really tiny and you're learning how to use them, but possibly doable.  On the other hand, nb pfs can be used as doublers, cleaning/burp cloths, inserts, etc, so even if you're not in them long, you may very well get more than your money's worth out of them.

  • 7lbs, 6 oz. We used orange edge GMD, KL0 and x-small covers until 10 lbs. For us that was at 6 weeks.

George was 8 lbs 5 oz and started fitting the BG OS diapers at 4 weeks. Before that, we used KL0s and prefolds mainly, and a few XS AIOs.

ETA - at 4 weeks he weighed ten and a half pounds.

  • DD was 7lbs, 2ozs. We used nb pfs. I wouldn't have wanted to deal with learning to fold and having extra, etc. with a newborn.
