Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If your baby has no teeth...

and they are over 7 months have you or when do you plan to start something other than purees?

I know..they don't NEED teeth to "chew", but it makes me nervous (and this is coming from someone who planned to do BLW even! lol)

But when did you start things like puffs/cherrios/teething biscuits, etc? Or small things like peas, cut up carrots, etc? Or plan to?

Re: If your baby has no teeth...

  • alex already eat the puffs. i just break them in half & she gums away...

  • I started puffs and small table food around 7months.
  • Not quite 7 months, but I've got a toothless cutie.  We've tried a bunch of different finger foods in the past 3 weeks and the only thing he'll even try to eat is toast.  He gagged on everything else and now won't even let it puffs, cheerios or mum mums in his mouth.  I thought it might be be partially b/c of the lack of teeth.

  • I started finger foods at 6 months. DD didn't really get the hang of them until maybe 7.5 months. Now we are doing table food. She loves pasta, bread with purees on top, some meats, crackers. We are getting to the point where whatever we eat she gets. DD still has zero teeth, but she can gum the food up just fine.

  • My LO still has no teeth. We started finger foods once she was better with her pincer grasp, around 8 months. We've done lots of things like puffs, lil' crunchies, Mum Mums, cheese, cous cous, grilled cheese, fruits/veggies, tortillas, beans.....and she has done great with everything.

  • We've been doing puffs for a couple of weeks now.  I'm just nervous about seriously switching away from purees because, while he's somewhat okay with getting a few of them into his mouth, I just don't see how he would be getting enough food!
  • We finally got a tooth this week. But before that I fed soft foods like pasta, fish, puffs, potatoes. Even with the tooth...he doesnt chew things. Justgums them and swallows.
  • My LO still doesn't have teeth =/

We started table foods around 9 months.

I don't give her anything hard or in large pieces but she pretty much can eat anything that's chopped small or shredded.

From what I understand, they still use their gums even when they have teeth since they mainly chew in the back and don't get molars until later.

Trust me, my LO has gums of steel!

I would suggest rotini pasta (easy to pick up), chopped / shredded chicken, steamed vegetables (carrots mush up easily with gums), pancakes, etc.

There tons of options just take it slow. I was nervous she would choke too but it's amazing what she can handle now.

  • We've been doing puffs for a few weeks now.  She can gum them really well, but she doesn't really have the pincer grasp down to pick them up and eat them on her own, so I think I'm going to wait a couple more weeks before introducing more finger foods.

  • Thanks everyone! I feel better now :) I think maybe around 8 - 8 1/2 months we'll start some new things!
  • a few teeth =/= chewing abilities. You'd have to wait for them all to come in for that!

We haven't started non-purees yet. But, I make the avacado mush pretty lumpy now so thats a start. I'm tempted to let her get in on it with her hands but I'm not sure how to start that the best?

  • We started table food at around 7-8 months, and by now he gets more table food than purees, with nary a tooth! He's always been good at grasping things, so he gets quite a bit in there, and he's at the point where he would prefer to feed himself anyway.

  • we started him on puffs and mumums a few weeks ago. he knew right away to chew them with his gums. no probs at all.

we are now moving onto itty bitty pieces of tast and hard boiled egg. carrots and anything actually hard is a long ways off ... they need teeth for that i think!

  • I have tried puffs a few times and I still get nervous. One time it looked like he was choking on them.

I was thinking of starting finger foods at 9 months. I guess it just depends on when he's ready.  We didn't start solids until 6 months.

  • DS has six teeth and I'm still nervous, lol.  I think it's because he has 4 on top and 2 on the bottom and they really don't use those to chew.  We give him organic Happybaby puffs and he handles those okay, but initially he gagged on them alot.  I know it's a preventative reflex for choking, but it still scares the crap out of me every.single.time.  We are also giving him chunkier 3rd foods like Earth's Best third food jars and he handles those just fine.  Last night, I steamed the hell out of broccoli and broke it up into little bits and he ate those okay.  Baby steps, I guess!

  • DS has been eating Puffs for nearly four months. He eats Cheerios, Kix (rarely), Mum Mums, fake chicken, soy cheese, bread, pasta, etc. No teeth to speak of yet, and no problems gumming his noms. He actually hates runny foods, and has always eaten very thick or lumpy food.

  • We are doing BLW. He actually does better being able to chew than with the purees.

He's had a few puffs, mum mums. We've also done bread, semi-mashed bananas, cheese sticks, etc. My mind is blanking on all the other stuff he's successfully eaten. We offer him more than that but he doesn't always go for it. But that boy can chew. I know from nursing that his bite is pretty hard even without teeth!

  • Mason still has no teeth and we offer him 50/50 puree/finger foods. He does just fine. No green beans or pieces of chicken though since I think he would need a tooth to shred it a bit.

puffs, yogurt melts, carrots, peas, pickle spears, banana, broccoli floret, ripe pear - all have been fine so far!

  • Still no teeth and we're also doing lots of finger foods: bananas, pasta, steamed peaches, pears, peas, chicken, waffles, pancakes, toast, sweet potato, butternut squash, string beans.  Think how much you use your front teeth to chew, probably not all that much.
