Babies: 0 - 3 Months

STTN- looking or insight

My LO is not STTN yet. It doesn't really bother us because he wakes up twice but goes right back to sleep. We just really aren't bothered by it. Everyone wants to give us tips and tricks that worked for them: rice cereal, CIO, etc etc. It's like it bothers everyone else. This is always the first question people ask us. I hate saying No because I feel we're doing something wrong and then we have to hear what we can do to change it. ugh.

So, my question is- do you believe that STTN is baby led or parent led? Meaning that the baby just starts doing it on their own or the parents "guide" the baby to STTN using techniques or tricks.

Just looking for thoughts and insight on others opinions on the topic and what other mothers are experiencing or hearing from others.

  • I think that waking up once or twice and going right back to sleep IS sleeping through the night for a newborn.

Thanks for the reassurance, this makes me feel better!

  • I think it is mostly all baby led. I am in the same situation, my son wakes up 2xs at night but does go right back to sleep, everyone asks me the same question to but it doesn't bother me much either. I figure when he's ready he will not wake up but I feel like he's still pretty little to be sleeping 9 hours strait with nothing to eat so hopefully this makes you feel a little better also!!! good luck:)
  • I did a poll on the 6-12 month board a few weeks ago...I will try to find the link. And most babies were not STTN till at least 4 months. Relax. Don't worry about it.

  • I would say def. baby led. I do the same procedure every night and some nights DD will STTN other nights she's up every 2 hours.. it def. depends on the baby.

  • Three nights ago he sttn for the first time, he did it again the next noght and was back to his reg. routine (up at 3 &6:30 ish) last night.  I doesn't bother me, I don't expect him to sttn, and his routine is great esp compared to up every 2 hours!  I will let him decide when he is ready.

  • I would say baby led.  I mean, there's a few things you can do to indicate it is nighttime- dark room, quiet, etc.  But the parent can't make the baby sleep!  Our LO really started STTN last week, first for 5-6 hours, then the past 3 nights for 7-8 hours.  Def. not parent-led, as we checked on her a few times to make sure she was okay because we were so surprised!  No CIO, formula or rice cereal here.  She either falls asleep on mommy after her last feeding or shortly thereafter.  We generally don't put her down until she's asleep (because she's so little), but she will fall asleep on her own in her bouncer seat, etc. and then we'll move her to her crib.
