Pregnant after 35

Risk of Downs Came Back: 1 in 300

I'm reposting this from 2nd tri - thinking this might be a good forum as well.

Last week at my first trimester screening the fold behind the neck was 1mm so I really thought we were in the clear. My doctors office just called and gave me this ratio.

This is my third, I am 35 now, turning 36 in May.Setting me up with a genetics counsellor.I guess for more testing and to talk about amnio.Said it's possible to get a false positive.

Please share your experiences.?

  • That's good, compared to ours...We came back 1 in 116.  I've been a wreck about it, but have decided not to worry until I truly have something to worry about.  My 2nd screening is on Monday, so we will know more then.  I've been quite the emotional roller coaster...

  • How old are you?

How was your first trimester screening?

I know, all we can do it wait. ?Nothing to worry about till we need to worry.

Although it was four years ago, with my first son my ratio was 1 in 22,600 - so when this came back I was caught off guard.?

  • Yes there's more bloodwork you can do in week 15 or 16 that can revise the numbers, I think.  Plus there's the level 2 u/s still to come (usually at 18-20 weeks).  So based on those new numbers, you can decide about whether or not you want to do amnio.

I had 1 in 310 chance of downs with this preg  after 1st trimester screening, and I was 39 at the time--they said I was screen-negative, which is a good thing (they said 1 in 300 was the cutoff for the screening being positive or negative, though that may be related to age).    Still, I'm a worrier and had lost previous preg. to chromosomal defects so we did the additional testing via bloodwork & our numbers improved dramatically (went up to something like 1 in 1300 for downs at that point, and other trisomies were even higher numbers, 1 in 16000 or something like that).

Meeting with a genetics counsellor is a great thing to do, they understand the issues & should be able to explain the situation & options very clearly. Definitely do that, it will probably make you feel better.  I'm sorry your first numbers aren't completely reassuring, but to me, they still sound pretty good!  KMFC.

  • I answered you on 2nd tri. GL!
  • Last year, I had a fold measurement of 5.5mm and 1:5 for DS...waited for the amnio and it was confirmed; along with other serious defects.  That would have been my third child.  My first child (age 36) the odds came back at 1:160 and my second child (age 38) was 1:200.  I proceeded without further testing on those two.  I completely understand your fear, but your odds kind of seem good to me in comparison to what I listed above.  My current pregnacy, I got a measurement fold of 1.1 and something like 1:2400 for DS and much higher for everything else.  I still did the amnio based on the last pregnancy and worry. So far, I am being reassured that things are measuring on great.  I'm crossing my fingers and praying for a healthy baby in a couple of months.  I don't think I'll stop worrying until he is born no matter what they tell me.  Best of luck to you.
  • I don't have any experience with this but just wanted to tell you my thoughts and prayers are with you!
  • I'm learning (delivered my son at 34)...what is the risk for under 35/36 years of age?

  • I did the NT and measured at 1.3mm.  The doc said that was excellent, but we should do the bloodwork anyway as I am 37 and will be 38 by the time all is said and done.  The blood work came back outstanding- I have the eggs of a 20 year old.  Keep your chin up!

  • Hi.  Our NFT was 1.1mm which is great, but our risk (with the blood test) for DS came back 1 in 310 which is the "cutoff" for high risk.  We decided on having the CVS test done.  We met with the genetic counsellor and had the procedure done at a certified hospital center.  After meeting with her and talking to my doctor, we came up that the odds of miscarriage and the odds of having a DS child were actually almost the same so we decided having the CVS done was the right thing to do.  Let me tell you, it was.  We found out about 10 days later that everything was perfect and that we were having a little girl (we wanted to know).  It was like a huge cloud was lifted and now I feel I can actually enjoy the pregnancy.  If you have a certified hospital or hospital center around that routinely performs CVS tests, I would say to do it.  Peace of mind and heart are worth it.  Best of luck to you!  I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers!
