Scheduling naptime during vacation time

How do you do it? We are supposed to visit San Antonio and go to Sea World and the Zoo with family. DS usually naps twice a day which would be smack in the middle of our time out. How do you deal with it? I feel like we would be unfairly wearing him out over the course of 4 days.

At that age, DS would nap in the stroller, so we would take a long walk (around the park/zoo) around nap time.  We aren't super strict schedule people, so our goal was to get him his two naps, even if they were late.  Every trip we've taken has thrown their schedules off, anyway, so I don't think we could have kept it if we'd tried.

Our bottom line is always that we will leave if it gets to be too hard on the kids.  So, if he can get a stroller nap and then another nap in the car or pnp where you are staying and his mood is ok, then I think you are fine.  If he is super cranky and can't handle it, you may have to leave the park and drive him around or take him home.

You'll also have to factor in the heat, because that may make napping hard.  We went to the SA zoo last May and there were very few places to keep cool.  They do have a toddler area that has a/c, so I suggest locating that when you get there so you have a place to take him if needed.

I'm not sure if that really answers your question, but my advice is to be flexible and be prepared to leave the group or change plans if it gets to hard on him.  Otherwise, just improvise.

  • When we do less scheduled vacations, like RV trips to campgrounds, we typically try to keep their nap routine intact as much as possible. But when we do stuff like the zoo, fair or theme parks we also try to get them to nap in the stroller. Like Emer said, if that's not working well and they get too fussy then we leave.

  • We always did the stroller as well. We'd pull the cover down  and shade it so it wasn't bright and let DD fall asleep that way.  She would also usually be very worn out by the time bedtime came and crashed pretty hard.
  • Thanks for the responses. Next question- do you think your stroller is comfy? I don't think ours is.
