Cloth Diapers and Circumcision care

We hope to CD as soon as LO is born, but since we plan on having him circumcised, I'm not sure if there are any special things we need to be careful of when CDing. I've read that sometimes the doctor gives a medicine/cream to apply several times a day during the recovery - is this cream unsafe for CDs like lots of rash creams? Are there any other concerns related to circumcision that I'm not even thinking of? Should we just use disposables during this recovery time (we haven't had our showers yet, but I expect we'll get a few packs of disposables from people who don't know we are CDing)?

Any advice on this is helpful - I'm not really well informed on this and have no experience with diapering or circumcision, so I'll be a complete newbie in both areas. Also - we'll be mostly using prefolds and covers, but will be buying some newborn-sized fitteds as well.

Re: Cloth Diapers and Circumcision care

  • We got enough disposables from our shower that we just used those while DS's circ healed, but I have a feeling next time we'll use cloth right away.

I'd recommend putting some sort of liner (we'll use fleece liners) between whatever cream or ointment (we just used vaseline to make sure the circ didn't stick to the diaper as it healed) between DS & the diaper to make sure it doesn't affect the absorbency.  We do the same now with non CD-safe rash cream.

  • DS was circ'd using a Plastibell (you can google that for pics and descriptions of the procedure) - there were no creams/ointments to use. We were told we didn't need to do anything at all to it- after 7 days, the ring fell off and we were good to go!

  • With DS I used fleece liners but then just used the gauze for his circ. Basically we had to apply vaseline to the gauze and wrap his penis in that. And after that the vaseline was not touching the diaper at all. Our diapers were fine and we used KL0s and PFs.
  • There is a vaseline like creme that is used with circumcision that is not cd safe. I would use a liner to prevent the creme from touching the diaper. As far as using a cd when your lo is circumcised  it will be fine. GL

    Ditto this word for word.

  • We used cloth through the circ care. I bought some scraps of fleece and cut them into diaper sized strips (maybe 4-5" by 10") and used those to keep the vaseline off the diapers. I'm pretty sure we washed them with the diapers because I didn't think about that being a problem and didn't know any better. It didn't cause us any issues with repelling, so apparently it wasn't that bad. I think most of the vaseline absorbed into the gauze anyhow, so it didn't really collect on the fleece liner and all the gauze got thrown away.

Same here! (except DS's ring took 10 days instead of 7 to fall off)

This for us also. I think it took 14 days to fall off though.  I was really happy with the plastibell since there was no ointment etc to use and seemed to be pretty painless.
