Success after IF

Has anyone gone through a breech delivery?

At my OB appointment today, we discussed delivery options.  Baby A is pretty much lodged head-down in my pelvis, but Baby B is completely breech.  I know that there is a very good chance Baby B will flip after delivery of Baby A, but my doc said that three docs in the practice (including him) will do breech deliveries if need be.  I didn't even know this was an option!  Now i need to do more research....

Re: Has anyone gone through a breech delivery?

  • I have not but my MIL delivered my DH (frank breech) 30 years ago.

It can be done!  I know it wasn't a pleasant experience but they both survived!  I think they somehow turned him.

That's the thing -- I know they can try to turn the baby, and we talked about that.  But three docs in the practice will actually deliver the second baby in the breech position!  I didn't know that was done at all....

That's crazy!! I didn't know they could do that either... I can see how they could maybe if the baby was coming feet first.. but a$$ first seems impossible!

  • I have heard of this.  I haven't experienced it though!   OMG you are getting so close.  How are you feeling?

  • I know someone who did this.  She had twin girls the week before Natalie was born.  First time mom.  Her DH was deployed and she didn't want to deal with a c/s recovery alone.  Baby A was head down and baby B was breech (frank, I think).  She was induced at 37 wks and it went great.
  • Forgot to say ... she says with twins when baby a is head down and Baby B is breech it's totally different than delivering a singleton breech - baby A "paves the way" for baby B.

I'm feeling pretty good overall, thanks!  Tired and sore, but nothing too bad yet!

Before hearing her story I had never heard of it either.  I thought it was a little crazy, but it worked for her I guess.  : )  I think her main concern was how she was going to care for twins without her husband for four months.

  • Isabel was not breech but I was. I was butt first. My moms dr told her after looking at her she could stay in the hospital as long as she wanted. Her dr was out of town and another dr delivered me. That said I have to wonder if what others are saying about baby A "paving the" is ture, it makes since to me. Good luck! I can't believe how far along you are, sooo exciting!!!

  • a lot of reading i've done says that breech for the second isn't such a big deal....honestly even having twin B head down doesn't mean anything as she'll have so much room in there once A is out that she can do whatever she wants.

it's fairly common in midwifery (real midwifery, not doctor-office-type midwifery) to do breech deliveries even on singletons.  it didn't used to be such a big deal at all.  there are lots of positions and maneuvers that supposedly help get a breech baby out.

  • DD was breech and having a breech delivery wasn't even an option for me.  They said either they will try to turn her or I just go with the scheduled c-section.  I didn't know they would do breech deliveries anymore either.  Interesting.
  • My grandmother delivered my mom and two other children breech, breach deliveries were once very common and all Drs used to know how to do them. With a breech delivery the big worries are the dead getting stuck but since you have a proven pelvis (already had a vaginal birth) and you will have delivered baby A as well this won't be an issue for you. Good Luck with what ever choice you make. I must admit that I am slightly jealous as Riley was breech and a vaginal birth wasn't an option for me.
  • I don't know the specifics of how it is done, but my OB will deliver breech babies vaginally.  He is the only one in his practice that will do it though.  As others have said it used to be common and all OBs could do it, but not so much anymore.  My grandmother delivered two babies breech.  There is a lot of literature on this in natural childbirth books.  Good luck with whatever you decide!
