Tummy Time is a nightmare

My babies HATE tummy time with a passion. They get pissed- screaming & crying. I get on the floor with them- talking & playing but it doesn't seem to register. I let them cry as long as it sounds like it's from effort or frustration. When it starts to escalate into full-on meltdown then I'll pick that baby up. I'm a little concerned that my intervention is counterproductive because it seems like tummy time is lasting for shorter periods and they aren't moving their heads back and forth as well as they did before.

Any pointers on making this more successful?

  • Milina hated tummy time from day one...I would still occassionally put her down for it, and after about 60 seconds each time she would drop her head to the floor and scream...I say if they hate it...give it a week and try again...and repeat of they still hate it...Milina never got tummy time...but here she is sitting just fine, scooting around on her butt and now she is getting into the crawl position since ava (who only tolerated tummy time for short periods) is crawling (backwards)...I wouldn't push it if they hate it...they will still do just fine....

  • Em hates, hates, hates it.  She cries the entire time.  I am convinced she will never crawl because she refuses to be on her stomach.

J loves it.  I think they like it or they don't.  I make Em do it and deal with the screaming.  I try to keep her entertained by putting a toy out in front of her.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.  She is slightly more tolerant of it at almost 5 months.

  • Ava was the same way.  And I did not push the issue.   Now at 9 mths, we are getting EI for her because she has low muscle tone in her arms.  She was never on her belly long enough to build arm strength.  After a month of EI, she is doing better.  She has even been rolling back to belly a few times.  And this morning I went in their room and she was asleep on her belly.  So i would definitley recommend trying tummy time.  Even if you only get a few minutes at a time.  good luck!

  • for us they just kept hating it until one day, they didn't hate it.

one tip is to just lift them in the air over your head, like playing airplane.  now, you have to make sure they are strong enough for that.  but it will make them use those same muscles trying to keep their heads up, but they'll be distracted.  i just don't know where your kids are at with head/neck strength.

another thing is to lie on the ground/bed and lay them on top of you so they can see your face.  also, similarly put them on the ground on one of those mats with a mirror and fun stuff.

our ped kept on us about tummy time, b/c they were delayed on neck/head control due to prematurity.  i refused to stress over it.

  • My babies were so delighted once they figured out how to roll onto their backs and end tummy time.   But the floor stuff gets more fun as they get older...they will roll around (and into each other), try to crawl, try to stand...just hang with it for small intervals.  it gets better!
