when did you move lo to their crib?

I want to move G to his crib, but I'm having issues.  He HATES sleeping on his back.  I've put him in his crib for naps and he wakes up usually about 5-10 minutes after I put him down.  He sleeps in fisher price soothing motions glider by our bed, the pedi recommended it because he gets congested a lot and it will help him breathe.  I will put him in bed with me to nurse and he falls asleep on his side and sleeps wonderfully on his side, but the pedi said not to put him on his side to sleep until he is rolling over.  So, I guess I'm wondering if I'm the only one who's 3 1/2 month old is not sleeping in their crib--and if anyone has any magic tricks on how to help a child like to sleep on their back!

Re: when did you move lo to their crib?

  • Have you tried elevating the crib?  Where it is basically at an incline?  Not sure if that would help but that might be an option. For my DS we used the sleep positioner for a while and we allowed him to sleep on his side in the positioner, but I think by your DS's age he was squirming out of it anyway. Not sure if anything i suggested would help, but just think, he's very close to rolling over, so pretty soon you should be able to put him to sleep on his side before too long.

  • Samantha is still sleeping in her swing.  I *think* I could move her now to her crib and she would be okay (she sleeps flat for naps) but I just haven't made the leap yet.

That said... All of my girls have slept on their sides, never flat on their backs.  I used a positioner to keep them there and never had any issues.

  • hmmmm...we moved to the crib at 3 months (about 2.5 weeks ago).  But now thinking about it, for the last two weeks she's been waking up soooo much now.  She was sleeping through the night prior to that in the bassinet of the pack and play. =(

  • Both of my kiddos were side sleepers and we use a sleep positioner.  We moved Luca to his crib at 3 months and Lila at 1 week...  Yep, the 2nd kiddo get the shaft Stick out tongue
  • we moved marion to her crib at 6 months.  She slept in a sleep positioner in our bed until three months then she outgrew the positioner.

I think if it's working for yall now, there's no need to change it.

  • Dylan was in his crib at around 2 weeks.  We had one side elevated for a while until his reflux got better.  Once we stopped swaddling, he quickly learned to roll to his side and has been a side sleeper for a while now.  We lay him down on his back though.  I would feel pretty comfortable using a sleep positioner to put him on his side if that's what would help him sleep well though.  I think side sleeping is a lot safer than belly sleeping and whatever works...

  • I have no tips on moving to a crib. DS sleeps in our bed. DD started each night in her crib, but I moved her to our bed around 11pm each night when she woke up... and she coslept with us until 16mo when she moved to a twin bed, not the crib.

So I have a crib that neither of my kids has ever spent a full night in.

If you want to try elevating one end of the crib mattress, put a rolled up towel or blanket under one end.

  • Call me a bad mom but C slept on her side in the bouncy seat for the first 3.5 months of life.  When we finally moved her to the crib and she was able to roll onto her side by herself.  She would not sleep on her back.

I moved O to the crib at 10 weeks but he had no issues with back sleep.

  • Cooper isn't sleeping in his crib.  When he goes down at night I put him in his cradle in our room (sometimes on his side, sometimes on his back, I'm a bad mom).  When he wakes up to eat during the night I just bring him in bed with me and he usually stays there until we get up.  When he drops a night feeding and sleeps longer than 3 hours at a time, I'll think about moving him.

  • Thanks so much ladies!  I feel better and will definitely do the side in the positioner thing.
  • C will not sleep on his back (unless he rolls that way, and that's infrequent).  He sleeps swaddled, in a sleep positioner, on his side in the crib for the first stretch of the night (however long that may be) and naps.  I think we started trying to get him in the crib about a month ago?  After he wakes up in the night, he comes into bed with us to nurse & sleep.

  • Technically, C was in his crib at 2.5 weeks.  But he was in the PNP in his room the second day at home.  I had intentions of having the PNP in our room for the first 2-3 months, but my kid talks a LOT in his sleep and I couldn't sleep through it.  So, out he went.

He slept on his back on the sleep wedge for a while and outgrew it about a month ago.  Now he sleeps on his back fine without it, but is still swaddled.  Once he wakes up to nurse at 6am we let him sleep in our bed for the rest of the morning if it's a weekend.  (during the week we're getting up for work)

I agree with a pp - do what works for now.

  • We moved Allie up there for most of her sleeping around 3 months.  We have a PNP in our room and I do bring her downstairs sometimes in the middle of the night if she wakes up...or if I am being lazy and just would rather have her in our room.  She loves sleeping on her side and now that I just have her in a sleep sack I am comfortable with it.  When we used to put her in the SwaddleMe, she would kick all over the place and one time she rolled over on her face and we saw her do it on the monitor and freaked out.  Until we stopped swaddling her (about a month ago), I felt more comfortable with her sleeping in our room. I agree with the other pp though....do what works for you.  Everyone is different!
